Vice President, Economic Damages & Valuations (MAI) Company Description J.S. Job Description We are seeking a qualified commercial real estate appraiser who is MAI designated by the Appraisal Institute for a key position in our LA office. Primary responsibilities will include hiring (as needed), developing, and overseeing commercial real estate appraisal staff with the appropriate technical skills to serve local and regional markets in support of J.S. Held referrals, along with generating new client business for the firm.

Additional responsibilities include commercial real property research, analysis, and preparation of valuation and other expert advisory reports for general commercial real estate valuation, estate planning, mergers & acquisitions, litigation support, forensic accounting, and real property damages. Engagements can involve up to 70% litigation ranging from family law, shareholder disputes, insurance‑related damages claims, and other unique and specialty engagements.

We most often interact within a team environment with other J.S. Held specialists across the United States. Sharing discussion, targeting, and coordination of tasks, professional responses/reports, and shared deadlines is common. Additional activities include managing document requests/production, building and maintaining valuation models and reports, conducting site visits, and providing professional client interactions. Collaboration with other financial forensic engagements will be required as necessary across the United States.

Required Qualifications

College undergraduate degree

Earned the MAI designation from the Appraisal Institute

High proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word

Strong quantitative and analytical skills: analyze large data sets and simplify/translate into condensed or visual format for presentation to the J.S. Held team or clients

Comfortable with finance and related issues such as operating statements and rent rolls applicable to appraisal of income properties

Solid oral and written communication skills, including ability to develop narrative valuation/expert reports and other client communication materials

Effective organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects to meet fluctuating deadlines and pressure situations with incomplete information

Strong attention to detail and maintain supporting documentation per J.S. Held requirements

Ability to research industry, economic, and benchmark data and apply such data to subject analysis

Maintain the quality of the J.S. Held brand in all oral and written communications

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity with common real estate valuation data resources

Willingness to contribute to articles in professional journals, if desired

A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $150,000—$200,000. Salary offered is based on a wide array of factors including skillset, experience, training, location, scope of role, and management responsibility.
