Controller Requirements & Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or CMA strongly preferred. 6–8 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a nonprofit financial role. Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting, and fund accounting. Experience leading audits, building budgets, and preparing financial statements. Proficiency with accounting systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Ramp) and strong Excel skills.

Controller Preferred Background & Skills Comfortable working in a start‑up environment, including building and refining systems and managing ambiguity. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in financial and operational practices. Passion for climate, sustainability, or clean energy advocacy is a plus.

Controller Day‑to‑Day Responsibilities Oversee daily accounting operations, including general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, and month‑end close. Prepare timely, accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for leadership and the Board. Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards, especially around restricted funds and grant reporting. Lead annual audit preparation and manage collaboration with external auditors. Monitor budgets and provide clear variance analysis, scenario planning, and mid‑year course corrections. Collaborate with accounting contractors and partner with the COO to translate financial data into accessible insights for decision‑making.
