Summary Provides a comprehensive dental program throughout the life cycle, with emphasis on prevention of dental disease, promotion of dental health, and treatment of disease, injuries, and malformations.

Responsibilities

Work with members of other departments and participate in planning joint technical programs, recommending methods and procedures for coordination of dental services.

Investigate and study trends and developments in dental practices and techniques reflecting applicable advances to guide professional and technical staff.

Participate in the integration of dental health services into primary care as indicated in the Dental Health Care Plan.

Assist in the development and execution of the Dental Health Plan.

Establish and maintain a recall system, short‑call list, and lists of patients who are chronically late or miss appointments.

Maintain accurate, confidential, and secure patient records.

Provide dental care by diagnosing and treating disease, injuries, and malformations of teeth and gums.

Perform visual examinations of patients’ teeth and surrounding oral structures, utilizing x‑rays, mouth mirrors, exploration, instruments and other diagnostic procedures; enter findings on a dental chart and in patient medical records; decide upon and carry to completion the most feasible plan of treatment including scheduling necessary follow‑up appointments.

Locate and repair cavities in teeth.

Extract impacted, infected, or otherwise diseased and troublesome teeth or perform root‑canal work.

Make impressions and models of jaw and mouth in preparation for dentures.

Treat diseases of teeth, gums, and mouth with appropriate drugs or by surgery.

Advise patients about dental health practices.

Assist in maintaining adequate dental supplies and equipment.

Promote the fluoridation of public water.

Conduct and participate in an ongoing dental health education program.

Conduct dental screenings on‑site and off‑site and track abnormalities.

Actively participate in the Continuous Quality Improvement Committee.

Observe and assist dental personnel at work to ensure safe and ethical practices.

Participate in national, state, and local dental societies and professional organizations.

Attend staff meetings and in‑service education programs.

Formulate and write technical reports and procedures.

Teach patients, community, and personnel dental health.

Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies, including training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints; and resolving problems in the absence of the Director of Dental Services.

Qualifications Education and Experience:

DDS or DMD from an accredited School of Dentistry.

Experience:

Six months of clinical experience preferred.

Licensure:

Must be licensed to practice dentistry in the State of Mississippi.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.

Communication:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret related documents; respond effectively to patients’ inquiries or complaints; write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style; make effective and persuasive presentations on complex topics to management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Must be licensed to practice dentistry in the State of Mississippi.

Physical Demands Employee is frequently required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Occasionally required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch. Employee may occasionally lift and/or move patients. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment Employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and risk of radiation. Noise level is usually moderate.
