Sr Data Scientist – Search and Browse (NLP, Query Understanding, LLMs)

Join Target’s Data Sciences team to help develop and manage state‑of‑the‑art predictive algorithms that use data to automate and optimize decisions at scale. You will work on the Search and Browse team, building the core relevance engine and data science products that power Target’s digital experience.

Core Responsibilities
Work with business partners to provide solutions for business problems in a fast‑paced, global environment.
Design, implement, and maintain high‑performance, scalable data science systems and services.
Architect data science solutions that capture, process, and mine huge datasets in the retail industry.
Apply cutting‑edge machine learning algorithms and NLP techniques to improve mobile and web search systems.
Perform data exploration, analysis, and visualization, and implement algorithmic solutions per specifications.
Follow machine learning best practices, including unit tests, code organization, CI/CD, and documentation.
About You
PhD or MS in Computer Science, Information Technology, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or relevant industry work experience in a quantitative field.
Exceptional coding skills in Python or Java with advanced technical problem‑solving skills.
3+ years of experience building end‑to‑end ML models and algorithms into production.
Experience with search indexing, ranking, information retrieval, query understanding, or recommender systems.
Experience deploying ML algorithms into production environments and working with ML Ops (VertexAI, BigQuery, etc.).
Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
Proficiency in querying large databases with SQL, HQL or similar.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, partnering with global teams.
Continuous learner staying on the leading edge of search, query understanding, applied ML, LLMs, and NLP advancements.
