Purpose To implement the District’s Strategic Plan by providing effective instructional leadership resulting in an empowering school learning community, focused on student growth, while making the best use of resources. The principal is expected to work interdependently with others and promote the mission, vision, and values of the District.

Qualifications

Possess valid Illinois Professional Educator License with Principal Endorsement

Completion of the Growth through Learning Teacher Performance Evaluator Training Program

Master’s Degree;

5 to 8 years teaching experience;

Administrative experience preferred;

Knowledge of the learning process and exemplary teaching practices;

Ability to establish and maintain effective organizational and community relationships;

Demonstrated leadership skills.

Role Description A principal has a clear sense of purpose and is committed to serving all members of the school community. As the instructional leader, the principal possesses a deep understanding of the teaching and learning process and believes the best use of time is by providing learning and growth opportunities for others. Principals are responsible for cultivating a supportive learning community. They develop and maintain positive and trusting relationships and strive to create an atmosphere of mutual respect. They understand, practice and promote collaboration in their work with staff members, parents and students. They ensure that “learning for all … whatever it takes” is the driving force behind every decision. Principals have clear goals that are aligned with the District’s Strategic Plan. They assume accountability for student growth and find ways to measure and document student growth.

Performance Responsibilities

To provide instructional leadership for the school resulting in increased student achievement.

Responsible for the development and continuous improvement of the educational program in the school measured by formal and informal assessment tools.

Responsible for the implementation of District curriculum and Board policies.

Maintain a culture of respect and responsibility in the school.

Manage the school for effective and efficient operation through planning, organizing, implementing all facets of the school’s operation.

Establish and sustain a positive building climate by building relationships with students, teachers and parents and showing continuous sensitivity to their concerns and needs.

Maintain effective communication with the school community through PTA and Building Council, as well as other regular communication avenues.

Develop, implement and monitor a school improvement plan, including professional development needed to realize the goals of the plan.

Provide the necessary professional development to maximize the effectiveness of the school program.

Supervise, coach and evaluate certificated and support staff.

To assist in planning and implementation of school safety and security.

Act as a liaison between School Board, administrators and local emergency personnel and staff and community.

Promote programs and activities that enhance the health, welfare and safety of the students.

Assign duties to staff members and implement the techniques of participative management as appropriate.

Participate as an active member of the District Leadership Team.

Honor and implement the processes and guidelines set forth in the District’s constitution.

Make effective decisions after due consideration of all pertinent facts and after a review of possible alternatives.

Screen, interview, and recommend candidates for employment following the District’s selection processes.

Assign staff members to positions where the effectiveness of the school program will be maximized.

Assume a leadership role and participate as a member of the Leadership Team in District responsibilities, including policy formation, interpretation and execution.

Establish annual goals for professional growth with the Superintendent.

Operate the school within the guidelines of the Illinois School Code, regulations prepared by the State Board of Education, policies adopted by the Board of Education and procedures approved by the Superintendent of Schools.

Supervise the assistant principal.

Assume additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent.

Assist the Director of Operations and the Director of Food & Nutrition Services in supervising custodial and food service personnel

Organizational Relationship Reports to the Superintendent

Salary Range $140,000 - $165,000 commensurate with experience
