Job Summary
The Lead Public Safety Dispatcher is responsible for dispatching police personnel in response to calls for service, assisting the Technical Services Director, and maximizing continuity within the Dispatch Unit. This position provides lead direction of the operations of the Dispatch center as well as performs the job duties assigned while on-duty in the 9‑1‑1 center. Positions in this class serve as shift leads and have full lead responsibility over assigned personnel in addition to performing the duties of a Public Safety Dispatcher. Direction is provided by the Technical Services Director and the Communications Operations Manager. The Lead Public Safety Dispatcher also serves as a training coordinator for formal training and performance programs and supplies input for employee evaluations.
Responsibilities
Dispatch police personnel in response to calls for service.
Assist the Technical Services Director and ensure continuity within the Dispatch Unit.
Provide lead direction of Dispatch center operations during on‑duty periods.
Supervise subordinate Public Safety Dispatchers and coordinate training.
Operate the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System, radio systems, and other communications equipment.
Maintain logs, process alarms, and perform other assigned duties.
Required Qualifications
High School diploma or GED equivalent.
Completion of a POST‑certified, 80‑hour Basic Complaint/Dispatcher course within 12 months of hire.
Background investigation, oral communication skills assessment, 12‑month probation, and medical examination.
Passing score on the POST Entry‑level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery before academy.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work rotational shifts (days, swings, and midnights), on‑call assignments, and overtime.
Ability to pass medical and psychological examinations and extensive background investigation per California POST standards.
Knowledge of Police Dispatching Procedures and state‑of‑the‑art Telephone and Radio Systems within one year of appointment.
Knowledge of Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Records Systems, and related information technology skills.
Preferred Qualifications n/a
License / Certification
Successful completion of the California POST Public Safety Dispatcher Basic Course.
Valid California Driver’s License.
Passing score on POST Entry‑level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery prior to academy.
