Senior Fine Art Specialist
Clars Auctions is the largest full‑service auction house in Northern California. The company holds a two‑ or three‑day auction once a month. The Fine Art Department, one of the most important departments in the company, generally has three full‑time specialists and various interns and is seeking a Senior Fine Art Specialist.
Responsibilities
Ability to interact with clients to obtain consignments of fine art, which includes knowledge of fair‑market evaluations and occasional appraisals.
Cataloging fine art compliant with Clars’ cataloguing structure.
Ability to market art to potential buyers.
Handle the physical demands of hanging large amounts of artwork.
Meet deadlines in a fast‑paced, team environment.
Work one auction weekend per month.
The applicant will also assist with many everyday duties of the art department, including research and display of property, marketing, public relations, and administrative tasks such as reviewing consignor statements, inventory control, and various customer service duties.
Qualifications
Minimum of 5 years of experience as an auction house fine art specialist.
Experience performing scholarly research.
Fluent in a foreign language (preferred).
Pre‑existing contacts/clients in the art world.
Four‑year college degree in Art History or related field.
Detail‑oriented and possess excellent follow‑through.
Can work self‑directed as well as part of a team.
Strong organization, critical thinking, and communication skills.
Reliable source of transportation for out‑of‑office appointments.
Work one auction weekend per month.
Substantial knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel and comfort learning new software.
