Head of Props — BMG Orlando
Full-time position. Blue Man Group Orlando is looking for a full-time Head of Props.
The Head of Props is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Props Department, including overseeing the crew show running positions. The Head of Props oversees all technical and safety aspects of the Props Department, including the construction, repair, purchase and maintenance of all props and consumables. The Head of Props participates in the hiring, training, corrective action, termination, evaluation, performance development and scheduling of all members of the department. Strong people management skills, the ability to collaborate with multiple departments and senior management, and experience in a variety of technical disciplines are required.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Ensure that Blue Man Group values and artistic vision are understood and supported across the organization;
Manage the Props Department for the Orlando production;
Create the department’s crew schedule; ensure coverage and maintenance for all shows upcoming shows;
Clearly communicate notes and/or changes to the show to all members of the Props Department, Artistic Direction,, Production Manager and Stage Management Department as required;
Supervise the ordering and organization of all supplies, consumables, and shop inventories;
Keep track of vendors and contact numbers and forge positive, collaborative relationships with suppliers;
Collaborate with the Production Manager to create and maintain the department budgets in accordance with procedures outlined by General Management;
Maintain the props, consumables, and design artistic aesthetic;
Oversee Props show running tracks, ensuring crew run sheets (including preset, show cues, turnover, and post-show) are updated regularly in collaboration with Stage Management;
Ensure that show operations are performed in a safe, professional, timely and efficient manner;
Maintain current knowledge of show tracks and be able to run departmental tracks in an emergency;
Execute or ensure general repair, construction, maintenance, and/or restock of all props and supplies as needed;
Troubleshoot technical issues as they arise;
Adhere to safety rules and regulations for locality;
Ensure Props Crew coverage and execute duties for all local & non-local Blue Man events as required. Ensure Carpentry Crew coverage for offsite appearances and events. These events include, but are not limited to, rehearsals, press events, shows, appearances and corporate events;
Participate in load-in and load-out and lend assistance to Production Management, Stage Management and other positions as needed;
Oversee department payroll;
Participate gigs as requested by local management;
All other work-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
The ability to work effectively in a team environment is required;
Various types of foams, plastics, glues, solvents, paints, tools and fastening hardware;
Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word and Excel, Photoshop, and Adobe;
Advanced skills in 3D drafting using AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks are a plus;
The ability to work effectively in low-light environments;
Tempera paint use for stage application;
Pressurized pneumatic systems, including controls, delivery methods, and outflow;
Hand sewing and machine sewing;
Plumbing systems, air systems; and electrical systems;
Testing voltage, different types of batteries, remote control systems, and household wiring;
Project Management;
Budgeting and Departmental budget forecasting;
Adhere to and promote all Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations as they pertain to the safe operation of all elements related to the show; participate in all required health and safety classes and emergency rescue procedure training;
Contribute to a safe and positive working environment at all times by adhering to and following all Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group standards, values, policies and regulations pertaining to safety using equipment and established working methods;
Assist other departments when necessary for cross-departmental support;
At least 5 years of previous experience or in a similar environment;
Working knowledge of Microsoft applications;
Previous leadership experience;
Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts or a similar field; or equivalent relevant work experience;
Ability to obtain OSHA 30 course completion card;
Fluent in English, both written and spoken; Ability to clearly and effectively communicate viaheadset;
Availability to work varied shifts, including weekends and holidays;
Ability to perform the essential functions of the job including, but not limited to: climbing, crouching, kneeling, standing, lifting, sometimes for extended amounts of time; lifting at least 50lbs, working with limited to no visibility; Full list of essential functions will be sent in the offer.
