Responsibilities Under the direction of the Regional Manager in the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR), Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), Process Safety Management (PSM) Unit, the Senior Safety Engineer (Industrial) is responsible for performing the full range of professional‐level senior safety engineering work at chemical plants, ammonia‑refrigeration units, and other facilities covered under California Code of Regulations, Title 8, section 5189 and the Cal/OSHA program. Working throughout the state, the Senior Safety Engineer conducts specialized safety inspections, accident investigations, and consultation assignments related to process safety management principles and California Code of Regulations, Title 8, Section 5189 at chemical plants, ammonia‑refrigeration units, and other PSM facilities. The job requires extensive experience, knowledge and skills in process safety management principles, practices and methods related to such facilities; assists the District Manager and Regional Manager in developing procedures and guidelines for conducting audits, inspections, and accident investigations; leads, plans, organizes, reviews and directs the work of teams assigned to perform inspections (e.g., Program Quality Verification (PQV) inspections, fatal accident investigations, complaints, etc.) and special assignments (e.g., Special Emphasis Projects). The Senior Safety Engineer evaluates work performance of safety engineers and prepares written training development plans for management to help improve staff performance; conducts committee meetings to revise or propose new safety orders within the Cal/OSHA program; performs in‑service and on‑the‐job training of staff, and works in an assigned district office and travels throughout the state as required.

Division of Occupational Safety and Health Process Safety Management – Chemical – North (Concord) 1855 Gateway Blvd., Suite 350, Concord, CA 94520

The work will primarily be in an office environment. At other times the work will be at a field site, such as chemical plants (as defined in California Code of Regulations, Title 8, section 5189), ammonia‑refrigeration units, PSM facilities, and other field sites which have the potential for exposures to safety and health hazards and hazardous substances. Other field work may be requested of Senior Safety Engineers in state emergencies.

Effective July 1, 2025, specific Bargaining Units and associated Excluded State employees are subject to a salary reduction between 2% – 4.62% in exchange for hours in the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) per month.
