A well‑regarded law firm in Washington, DC, seeks a 1st or 2nd year tax associate with 1‑4 years relevant experience to join its Tax Disputes & Tax Litigation practice group. Ideal candidates will possess tax controversy experience and substantive tax knowledge, gained from law firm or government agency experience (IRS or DOJ). Academic knowledge in tax may also be considered.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct legal research and draft internal and client legal memoranda
Perform intensive factual investigations and conduct witness interviews
Respond to IRS requests for information and manage eDiscovery
Draft persuasive motions and briefs, and defend depositions
Work on client representation teams before the IRS examination function, the IRS Independent Office of Appeals, and in litigation
Associates in this role will quickly gain significant responsibility regarding factual development, legal research, and persuasive legal writing, along with direct client contact and interaction with the IRS on behalf of clients.
Qualifications
Strong academic credentials and excellent written and oral communication skills
Attention to detail and sound judgment
Ability to work effectively as a team player under deadline pressure
Applicants with an LLM in Tax or knowledge in substantive tax areas, prior experience with the IRS or DOJ Tax Division, or previous experience as a CPA are encouraged to apply.
The firm represents a diverse range of clients, from large companies in federal tax litigation to closely held businesses and individuals undergoing IRS examination. Many cases involve international tax components, and the Tax Disputes & Litigation practice group frequently collaborates with other tax specialists in corporate, partnership, international tax, tax‑exempt organizations, and trusts & estates.
