Senior AI/ML Engineer – Remote (Optum)
Optum, a global organization that delivers care, aided by technology, is looking for a Senior AI/ML Engineer to join its Insight Technology and Engineering team. This role is based in Seattle, WA but is open to remote work from anywhere in the U.S. (Minimum four days in Minneapolis or Washington, DC office required for hires in those cities.)
Base Pay Range $89,900.00/yr – $160,600.00/yr
Primary Responsibilities
Design and implement analytics or AI/ML solutions for fraud, abuse, and waste (FAW) prevention, with opportunities to work on projects such as revenue cycle management, automated medical coding, payment adjudication, and image analysis.
Collaborate with business and operations teams to translate complex requirements into actionable AI solutions and communicate insights to leadership and stakeholders.
Design, train, and deploy ML models into production using techniques such as generative AI/LLMs, NLP/NLU, computer vision, deep learning, etc.
Work with large‑scale data and distributed computing frameworks to process and analyze high‑volume healthcare datasets efficiently.
Apply advanced methodologies in statistics, optimization, probability theory, and machine learning to build tools, perform rigorous analysis, and deliver robust solutions using Python or similar languages.
Partner with engineering teams to implement scalable, flexible pipelines that bring AI innovations into real‑world products.
Adapt to an agile, fast‑paced environment and maintain a passion for exploring and integrating cutting‑edge AI technologies to support future projects.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Mathematics/Statistics, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Bioinformatics, or another technical field that provides strong mathematical training.
5+ years of hands‑on experience with at least one programming language, such as Java, Python, PySpark, or SQL.
5+ years’ experience detecting fraud in healthcare, banking, or security by applying deep analytics to structured and unstructured data. Skilled at extracting signals using pattern recognition, NLP, imaging, and related technologies.
Proven track record of developing and deploying models in cloud environments such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
Demonstrate the ability to independently initiate and drive projects from conception through to completion.
Proven ability to effectively communicate technical concepts and results to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Mathematics/Statistics, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Bioinformatics, or another technical field.
