Program Director – Suffolk County Jail Project
Boston Medical Center (BMC) is seeking a Program Director to provide oversight for a new 45‑bed men’s behavioral health unit located in the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department’s Jail. The program focuses on culturally responsive, person‑centered care within an innovative model of service delivery.
Position Summary The Program Director collaborates with Clinical and Administrative leadership to ensure smooth service delivery to incarcerated persons. Responsibilities include overseeing day‑to‑day programming, managing the milieu, supervising a multidisciplinary team, and ensuring the project’s mission and quality standards are achieved.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the program, operationalizing BMC core values and promoting patient‑centered care, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Manage all programming during operating hours, assign duties, communicate goals, and address crises in collaboration with jail and operational staff.
Oversee personnel management: hiring, training, supervising, setting performance metrics, evaluating performance, and initiating progressive discipline.
Coordinate interdisciplinary collaboration through staff meetings and liaison with SCSD staff.
Develop relationships with city/state agencies and community‑based organizations for collaboration, funding, and referral pathways.
Participate in fiscal management, monitor the program budget, and pursue funding/grant opportunities.
Support employee resiliency initiatives, including incident debrief sessions and resilience workshops.
Engage in strategic planning of the project’s future with relevant leadership.
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree (MPH, MBA, MSW) preferred.
Prior experience working with communities and individuals impacted by the criminal legal system.
Experience with trauma interventions and holistic mental wellness.
Minimum three years in a supervisory/management role.
Minimum ten years in social services (mental health, community violence, case management, health care).
Prior experience managing behaviors in a milieu is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Deep understanding of the needs of impacted individuals and communities in Boston.
Leadership ability to guide, direct, and mentor a diverse interdisciplinary team.
Capability for long‑range program planning involving complex decision making.
Strong prioritization and project management skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Bi‑lingual or bi‑cultural candidates are preferred.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to perform and lead effectively in stressful situations and solve problems.
Self‑direction and decision making within established policies.
Compensation Range $77,000.00 – $112,000.00. This range is based on job qualifications; compensation may vary based on education, experience, skills, and business needs. BMC offers comprehensive benefits, bonuses, and growth opportunities.
