Software Engineering Manager – Ubuntu Linux Kernel Join

as a Software Engineering Manager responsible for the delivery and ongoing support of all Ubuntu Linux kernels. The role involves technical leadership, team growth, and ensuring high-quality kernel releases for millions of users worldwide.

Location Remote work from anywhere in the world. No office presence except in Taipei, Taiwan, where no office exists.

Role Entails

Lead a distributed team of software engineers in your geographic region on delivery and maintenance of Ubuntu Linux kernels.

Own specific aspects of the Ubuntu Linux stack, including:

Collaboration with silicon or cloud partners to optimise kernels for their execution environments.

Ensuring wide hardware platform support.

Defining and executing stringent quality control standards for the user community.

Mitigating security threats and exploits in the kernel.

Automating build, test, and delivery processes.

Engage with internal Canonical teams, the open-source community, and commercial partners.

Qualifications

Significant programming experience in C; Python, Golang, or similar languages strongly preferred.

Substantial experience with operating system kernel internals (Linux experience highly regarded).

Demonstrated experience managing or leading software engineering teams.

Ability to coordinate cross-functional teams toward common goals.

Familiarity with version control practices, ideally Git.

Experience with software packaging formats; direct experience with Ubuntu/Debian/Snap highly valued.

Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.

Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for company events (up to two weeks).

Nice-to-Have Skills

Experience with kernel patching and debugging.

Strong grasp of device drivers, BSPs, and low-level system engineering.

Background in driving CI/CD and process automation initiatives.

Public involvement with an open-source project.
