Overview This role focuses on providing medical and clinical support services to patients within Surgical Services. The position involves medical services related to excision or incision of a patient’s body, such as interventional procedures, and ensuring a safe environment for patients undergoing invasive procedures or surgery. The role may direct the work of other lower level professionals or manage processes and programs. The majority of time is spent overseeing design, implementation or delivery of processes, programs and policies using specialized knowledge and skills typically acquired through advanced education. This may be an entry level role applying broad theoretical job knowledge with supervision; problems faced are not typically difficult or complex, and it may involve explaining facts, policies and practices related to the job area.

Job Description Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree.

Completion Perfusion program.

Eligible for American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion examination.

Perfusionist license.

Duties and Responsibilities The duties and responsibilities listed below describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be all-inclusive. Other duties may be assigned.

Operates heart-lung machine and ancillary equipment under supervision of professional staff; monitors and maintains continuous blood flow and respiration to the patient.

Maintains thorough perfusion records before, during and after pump run; records pump data, laboratory values and activated clotting times.

Provides for maximization of blood conservation techniques.

Determines heparin/protamine dosages for anticoagulation and reversal.

Adjusts system so the patient’s respiratory and/or circulatory systems gradually perform independently of the pump.

Disassembles, inspects, cleans, and reassembles equipment and ensures proper storage.

Reviews patient records and consults with surgeon, anesthesiologist and nursing staff for appropriate selection of perfusion equipment.

Prepares appropriate equipment for each case using sterile technique; assembles solutions and drugs for use during bypass.

Performs or arranges for preventative maintenance of perfusion equipment.

Orders, inventories, and stores standard supplies and equipment.

Participates in continuing education and presents discussions as assigned.

Performs quality assurance tests per hospital and JCAHO protocol and records data for review and audit.

Ensures OSHA-mandated safety modules are completed annually.

Assists with setup/placement of intra-aortic balloon catheter and preparation of ventricular assist devices in the operating room.

Assists perfusion leadership with researching, writing and implementing standard perfusion procedures and protocols.

Oversees continuing education of staff by organizing seminars/discussions on perfusion topics.

Under supervision, sets up quality assurance assessments in areas such as laboratory data and medical record charting; assists in data collection for databases and safety checks.

Assists in development and running of research projects related to cardiopulmonary bypass and perfusion.

Acts as a resource for perfusion inquiries from outside hospitals, manufacturers, physicians and staff.

Maintains complete and accurate perfusion records and evaluates new products and techniques.

Participates in training of observational and clinical perfusion students.

Participates in equitable call coverage with the team and adapts to changes in patient condition or operative technique.

Monitors and records vital signs during bypass, including blood flow, gas flow, oxygenation, EKG and temperature.

Completes safety checklists and records relevant data forms.

Operates and monitors Cell Saver and other intraoperative blood salvage systems.

Assesses eligibility for autologous pre-bypass blood donation and collects if eligible; may add blood products to the bypass system when necessary.

Monitors coagulation status through activated clotting times and other laboratory tests; continues to monitor until independence from mechanical support.

Physical Requirements

Ability to work in semi-restricted and restricted operating room and perioperative areas.

Stands under hot surgical lights for prolonged periods.

Regular lifting and positioning of patients, materials, and equipment; exposure to hazards and loud environments.

Ability to wear protective lead apron and be exposed to radiation and other hazards.

Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals, blood and bodily fluids, and extreme temperatures.

Skills & Abilities

Advanced knowledge of aseptic technique and infection prevention practices.

Strong knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, microbiology, and pharmacology.

Proficiency with computers, surgical equipment, and applicable infrastructure.

Ability to provide care across the lifespan.

Excellent interpersonal skills with staff, patients, physicians, vendors, and departments.

Ability to act quickly and authoritatively under stress.

Commitment to ongoing clinical education and best practices through literature and research.

Compensation The base pay ranges reflect the minimum qualifications for the role. Individual offers consider relevant experience, certifications, education, skills, and internal equity. Beyond base pay, a comprehensive Total Rewards package supports health, financial security, and career growth.

Pay Range: $208,000.00 - $228,305.17
