Machine Learning Engineer / Machine Learning Scientist, Multi Modality – Altos Labs Join Altos Labs to build computational platforms enabling multi‑modal generative foundation models for biology. Our mission is to restore cell health and resilience through cell rejuvenation to reverse disease, injury, and age‑related disabilities.

What You Will Contribute As part of our team, you will accelerate progress in developing multimodal generative foundation models for multiscale biology. You will build, deploy, and optimize machine learning systems, collaborate across multidisciplinary teams, and design state‑of‑the‑art models to tackle biological questions.

Responsibilities Machine Learning Engineer

Build, deploy, and optimize machine learning models at scale.

Pre‑train and fine‑tune large‑scale systems using multimodal biological data and natural language inputs.

Develop efficient data loading strategies and performance tracking for distributed training across multiple nodes.

Apply software‑engineering skills to create reliable, scalable, performant distributed systems in a cloud environment.

Machine Learning Scientist

Design, develop, and evaluate state‑of‑the‑art foundation models, scaling them to benefit research.

Pre‑train and fine‑tune large‑scale systems using multimodal biological data and natural language inputs.

Gain insights through theory, deep research, and mathematical underpinnings.

Use AI as a tool to accelerate research.

Apply strong coding experience to model development in Python and relevant frameworks.

Minimum Qualifications Machine Learning Engineer

MS in Computer Science, Statistics, Machine Learning, AI, or related discipline.

0–5 years of relevant experience in academic or industry settings.

Very strong programming skills in Python and deep‑learning libraries (PyTorch, Hugging Face Transformers, etc.).

Experience with distributed training frameworks (DDP, FSDP, Deepspeed, Megatron, etc.).

Expertise in transformers, natural language processing, multi‑modality, or diffusion models.

Machine Learning Scientist

PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or similar field.

0–5 years of relevant experience in academic or industry settings.

Prior experience developing and implementing novel generative AI models in transformers, multi‑modality, or diffusion models.

Deep understanding of machine‑learning principles and model application.

Strong programming skills in Python and deep‑learning libraries.

Track record of published peer‑reviewed innovative AI/ML research.

Experience writing production‑quality code with modern frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, etc.).

Experience with multi‑GPU and distributed training at scale.

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity with multimodal data integration via early/late fusion strategies.

Track record of ML applied to NGS data (RNA‑seq, ATAC‑seq, ChIP‑seq, DNA methylation), biological imaging modalities, or spatial transcriptomics.

Salary For San Diego and Redwood City locations, salaries vary by role and experience (see full ranges below).

ML Engineer I: $150,450 – $203,550 (San Diego) / $153,000 – $207,000 (Redwood City)

ML Engineer II: $170,000 – $230,000 (San Diego) / $178,500 – $241,500 (Redwood City)

ML Scientist I: $195,500 – $264,500 (San Diego) / $210,800 – $285,200 (Redwood City)

ML Scientist II: $232,050 – $313,950 (San Diego) / $246,500 – $333,500 (Redwood City)
