Job Title and Location
Histotechnologist (per diem) – Boston, MA. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Employment: Per Diem, Shift: Rotating, Category: Laboratory.
Job Overview When you join the growing BILH team, you’re not just taking a job, you’re making a difference in people’s lives. You will process patient surgical pathology specimens to paraffin, embed tissue in paraffin, section paraffin blocks using microtomes, stain prepared tissue, cover‑slip slides, and assess stains and sections microscopically for quality. You will also maintain equipment, supplies, and the work environment in compliance with hospital standards.
Essential Responsibilities
Process and embed surgical, biopsy, and autopsy tissue in paraffin under the guidance of the Histology Supervisor.
Prepare slides from paraffin blocks using microtomes at the correct settings for individual tissue types.
Follow standard operating procedures to prepare stains and solutions, and stain prepared tissue using routine processes.
Cover‑slip and evaluate microscopically the quality of stains and sections.
Maintain equipment for proper functioning and keep supply inventories up to date.
Prepare and maintain slides, solutions, and hazardous chemicals.
Participate in inter‑shift coverage for time off, emergencies, and holidays.
Maintain patient identification for all specimens and perform other duties assigned by the Histology Supervisor or Lead Technician as needed.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent plus additional training in the histology field.
Greater than 1 year of applicable experience as a trained histotechnician in a high‑complexity histology laboratory, or 1 year of lab support assistant experience in a high‑complexity histology laboratory followed by on‑the‑job training and demonstrated competency.
Computer skills: experience with web‑based applications, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
Preferred Qualifications
Licensed ASCP Histotechnologist certification preferred.
Successful completion of an accredited histotechnology program preferred.
Competencies Decision Making, Problem Solving, Independence of Action, Written and Oral Communications, Knowledge, Team Work, Customer Service. These competencies are required to perform the role effectively and work well within the laboratory team.
Physical Nature of the Job Sedentary work. Exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally in carrying, lifting, pushing, pulling objects. Sitting most of the time; walking and standing required only occasionally.
Pay Range $42.00 – $56.53 per hour. The base hourly wage may include shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices as permitted by law.
Vaccination Requirement The BILH requires all staff to be vaccinated against influenza (flu) as a condition of employment.
