Senior R&D Engineer – System Architecture (Italy based)

Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Hardware Architect with expertise in memory design, intra‑ and inter‑chip networking, system integration, and performance tuning. Your primary role will be to design, architect, and optimize the hardware foundation that powers Axelera’s cutting‑edge AI acceleration platforms.
Key Responsibilities
Design and implement next‑generation AI accelerators, focusing on memory and network architectures.
Build architectural models, validate performance across a range of AI workloads, and research optimal configurations.
Prototype advanced hardware and create detailed specifications.
Perform rigorous performance evaluation and behavioral verification.
Collaborate with cross‑functional teams—including software engineers, digital designers, ML scientists, and product managers—to align project goals and requirements.
Communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
Document knowledge, share best practices, and participate in technical discussions.
Engage with academia or industry partners on joint research projects.
Contribute to intellectual property via patent filings, whitepapers, or conference publications.
Essential Qualifications
Master’s or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related fields with a focus on circuit design, computer architecture, or high‑performance computing.
Basic working knowledge of Neural Networks, especially convolutional or transformer networks for computer vision and sequence modeling.
Experience in software development and hardware development.
Strong programming skills in Python.
Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience or knowledge of networking protocols such as RoCE or InfiniBand and remote direct‑memory access.
Basic knowledge of common computer architectures (CPU, GPU, AI accelerators) and SoC architecture.
Proven track record of innovative contributions to AI/ML projects or research initiatives, including publications or patents.
Location
Italy – remote role supported with relocation to Bologna, Florence, or Milan for international talent.
