Executive Director – Vermont Afghan Alliance Location: Burlington, Vermont (in person – regular statewide travel)

Pay Range: $75,000.00/yr – $85,000.00/yr

Start Date: As soon as possible, ideally by March 1 2026

Overview The Vermont Afghan Alliance is a non‑profit welcoming and assisting Afghan allies in Vermont. In 2024 the organization served more than 250 Afghan community members statewide and is on track to surpass this outcome in 2025. The Alliance seeks a motivated and dynamic Executive Director to help shape the next chapter of the organization. The ideal candidate will be a skilled fundraiser, communicator, and nonprofit leader who can collaborate with a diverse staff, board, volunteers, and community partners to serve the community and lead the Alliance into a sustainable future.

Primary Responsibilities

Fundraising and Development:

20 % of the Executive Director’s time, supported by a fundraising consultant and Board members, is dedicated to raising the funds needed to sustain and grow the organization. Responsibilities include developing future programs and budgets consistent with the strategic plan, grant writing, and meeting with potential funders (public and private).

Program Management:

Overseeing and supporting program officers to meet all program objectives, including grant reporting and programmatic outcomes.

Communications:

Serving as the primary spokesperson for the organization, managing the Alliance’s website, newsletter, and social media, and engaging the public and media about the Alliance’s work.

Organizational Development:

Supporting the Board of Directors in conducting regular Board meetings, developing and implementing a strategic plan, and developing office policies and procedures with regular staff training.

Human Resources:

Recruiting and onboarding new staff, managing human resources, terminating staff, and maintaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive work environment.

Budget Management:

Overseeing the proper financial management of the Alliance, including budget development, forecasting, financial reporting, and compliance.

Desired Experience and Education

Relevant education and prior experience working in non‑profit management, governance, or program management.

Prior grant writing and fundraising experience.

Ability to speak Pashto and/or Dari (bonus).

Connection to or experience working with the humanitarian sector or refugee resettlement.

Prior grant management experience including implementation, evaluation, and reporting.

Prior experience with case management and providing constituent services.

Ability to manage and implement a complex budget and multiple projects simultaneously.

Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking.

Adept at navigating a dynamic and ever changing political and funding landscape.

Excellent people skills, specifically the ability to lead and inspire a team, interns and volunteers, and build community partnerships.

Demonstrated ability to work and thrive in a multicultural environment, across language barriers and cultural traditions.
