The Director, Product and Market Strategy – Molecular & Cellular Biology Solutions leads strategic initiatives and product management to drive global growth across Takara Bio’s portfolio, including core molecular biology tools (PCR/qPCR, cloning, DNA purification), protein expression systems, and advanced therapy support products (viral delivery systems, cell & gene therapy). The role combines deep technical and domain expertise in molecular and cellular biology with cross‑functional leadership to develop and execute market‑driven product roadmaps aligned with corporate objectives and R&D capabilities.

Key responsibilities include overseeing the full product lifecycle – from phase gate alignment and go‑to‑market planning to tactical marketing execution – mainly for North America but with global impact. The director also manages strategic partnerships, collaborations, and business ventures, negotiates contracts, tracks performance metrics, and translates scientific and market insights into actionable strategies that drive short‑ and long‑term growth through targeted campaigns, sales enablement tools, and cross‑functional initiatives.

Product Management & Commercialization

Leads and mentors a team across multiple product lines, overseeing product lifecycle, development timelines, and resource allocation.

Collaborates with R&D and cross‑functional teams to prioritize and execute product roadmaps aligned with strategic goals.

Tracks product development projects and leads the team through challenges in timelines, technical risks, vendors, shifting requirements, resource limitations, and cost.

Ensures market research, NPVs, new product proposals, marketing requirements, go‑to‑market strategies, product launches, and sales enablement initiatives meet deadlines.

Works with Takara Bio Product Management, R&D, Operations, and commercial teams to bring product roadmaps to life.

Conducts product line reviews and post‑launch assessments to optimize performance.

Market Strategy & Business Growth

Leads commercial/business activities of assigned market areas, managing team members directly.

Serves as domain knowledge expert for market trends, applications, competition, and marketplace strategy and tactics.

Builds business cases and financial models for new growth opportunities (e.g., in‑licensing, acquisitions) and presents to senior management for approval.

Strategic Partnerships & Ventures

Provides vision and rationale for novel business opportunities that expand the market for current products or lead to new technologies.

Identifies, evaluates, and develops sponsored research programs, partnerships, and acquisitions.

Aligns external opportunities with internal capabilities to support innovation and growth.

Marketing & Sales Enablement

Partners with Sales leadership to set budgets and achieve sales targets.

Develops tactical marketing plans and campaigns to drive lead generation and revenue.

Creates product messaging and high‑impact sales tools, including cue cards, brochures, application notes, and web and social media content.

Delivers market‑focused training for internal teams and distributors.

Analyzes campaign performance to improve ROI and explore new promotional channels.

Represents Takara Bio at industry events and technical meetings.

Qualifications

BA or BS degree; MS and/or PhD considered favorably.

Minimum of 18 years of product marketing experience in life science or related markets, with at least 10 years managing a marketing team.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated presentation proficiency.

Comprehensive knowledge of molecular and cell biology disciplines, including techniques, applications, and competitors in viral delivery, cell & gene therapy, cloning, PCR, protein expression, and DNA purification.

Highly effective analytical, problem‑solving, and judgment skills, with demonstrated ability to manage senior‑level team work.

Proven success in developing product roadmaps and strategies that increase commercial growth and impact in academic and industrial settings.

Experience managing external partnerships and collaborations.

Solid business acumen and understanding of product marketability for both academic and industrial customers.

Detail‑oriented with strong organizational and time‑management skills.

Excellent interpersonal skills and creative thinking.

Collaboration orientation, building credibility and relationships across functions and levels.

Emerging business leader with sustained performance and accomplishments.

The US base salary range for this full‑time position, expected to be located in San Jose, CA, is $220,000 - $230,000 USD. This range may be modified at any time at our sole discretion. Individual compensation packages are based on factors unique to each candidate, including job‑related skills, training, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions.

The director role is onsite in San Jose, CA, with approximately 30% travel and some international travel may be required.
