Job Summary At the FBI our computer scientists work alongside technology professionals within a dynamic, state‑of‑the‑art environment to prevent cyberattacks through counterterrorism, counterintelligence, fraud, identity theft, and other crimes. These programming experts regularly support special agents and intelligence analysts in investigations by designing, developing, and testing tools and systems to protect the American people and national security.
Key Requirements
U.S. Citizen.
Valid driver’s license.
Top Secret‑SCI clearance (or ability to obtain).
Some travel may be required.
Complete a 10‑week mandatory Computer Scientist Field Operations Training within first year.
Major Duties
Perform system and network procurement, installation, administration, and security; develop and use basic computing environments for analysis.
Develop and implement custom tools and methods, troubleshoot and modify existing tools for digital evidence analysis.
Identify, vet, and implement new tools and methods.
Provide technical assistance in investigations; conduct liaison and outreach.
Draft documents on technical matters at appropriate levels.
Stay current with advances in technology; provide guidance on new tools.
Testify in court.
Qualifications and Evaluations Applicants must meet the qualification requirements by the closing date. Veterans’ preference will be applied. Applicants will be evaluated using the FBI’s Candidate Rating Procedures.
Specialized Experience (SE) Requirements by Grade GS-7
1 year of SE at GS‑5 level: use existing tools; assist with custom tool implementation; provide basic assistance; draft documents.
GS-9
1 year of SE at GS‑7 level: troubleshoot/modify tools; develop custom tools; draft advanced documents.
GS-11
1 year of SE at GS‑9 level: assist with procurement, administration; troubleshoot tools; develop and implement custom tools; assist with documents; coordinate with private sector.
GS-12
1 year of SE at GS‑11 level: perform advanced procurement & administration; troubleshoot tools; develop basic custom tools; provide assistance; draft documents; liaison.
GS-13
1 year of SE at GS‑12 level: perform advanced procurement, administration; troubleshoot tools; identify and implement new tools; provide advanced assistance; coordinate with private sector; act as subject matter expert and testify.
Education Requirements All degrees must be from an accredited college or university.
GS‑7: Bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement or one year graduate‑level education.
GS‑9: Master’s or equivalent, or 2 years of higher‑level grad education.
GS‑11: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 years of higher‑level grad education.
GS‑12 & GS‑13: Education may not substitute for SE.
Foreign education may be used if comparable to U.S. accredited institutions.
