Position Summary This seasonal role (June – August) supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The CIT Directors provide overall leadership and management of the Counselor‑In‑Training (CIT) Program, training, scheduling, managing, and evaluating 14‑year‑old campers in the Junior (Jr.) CIT program and 15‑year‑old volunteers in the Senior (Sr.) CIT program. They also serve as members of the senior staff team, delivering high‑level leadership across the entire camp operation and leading by example to inspire others.

Responsibilities

Provide a high‑quality camp experience through excellent, timely customer service.

Supervise all Junior and Senior CITs.

Evaluate CITs via regular verbal check‑ins and two formal written coaching cards.

Schedule cabin and activity assignments for all CITs.

Conduct check‑in meetings at the start and end of each day for all CITs.

Lead a week‑long training for all CITs that mirrors staff training.

Provide ongoing weekly training to ensure continuous education.

Coordinate special trainings (Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR, Ropes, Archery) with department leaders.

Implement systems for gathering staff feedback on CIT performance.

Complete timely evaluations and recommendations, submitted to the Camp Director/Assistant Camp Director before summer’s end.

Maintain communication logs using CampBrain software.

Lead essential training sessions during Staff Training week and Senior Staff Retreat.

Remain calm during emergencies, ensuring CITs are accurate during drills.

Assist with special events and summer fundraising campaigns.

Build positive relationships with CITs, campers, parents, caregivers, counselors, and senior staff, providing a high‑level experience for all.

Communicate effectively and timely with the Camp Director/Assistant Director.

Adhere to policies related to consumer boundaries.

Attend required abuse risk management training.

Follow procedures for managing high‑risk activities and supervising consumers.

Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.

Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.

Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum of 2 years leadership and childcare experience.

Teaching, facilitation, and team‑building experience preferred.

Supervisory and staff‑development experience preferred.

Experience working with children preferred.

Familiarity with various outdoor activities.

Strong working knowledge of computers and common programs (Word, Excel).

Administrative experience.

Effective delegation skills.

Ability to handle sensitive, confidential information.

Energetic and positive personality.

Strong organizational and time‑management skills.

Ability to stay calm in stressful situations.

Ability to respond to critical incidents and act swiftly.

Must complete YMCA required training as scheduled.

Must maintain updated CPR and First Aid/AED certifications.

Must successfully clear FBI and state criminal background checks.

Physical Requirements

Ability to sit, stand, or walk for long periods.

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Ability to push, pull, bend, and kneel regularly.

Verbal and written communication essential.

Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and act swiftly in emergencies.

Ability to view and enter data on a computer for long periods.
