Senior Underwriting Officer, North American Specialty Casualty Base pay range: $96,000.00/yr - $350,000.00/yr

Description As a member of the NAS E&S Casualty leadership team, you will contribute to the growth and profitability of the casualty business through expert advisory and underwriting support. In addition to being responsible for product and forms adherence to North American best practices, this role will facilitate innovative product solutions and modification to policy language to meet the needs of unique risks present in the E&S market.

You will manage highly complex underwriting accounts and assist the staff in triaging opportunities, comprehensively and creatively structuring deals, and enabling staff development in underwriting best practices and product expertise. The position requires extensive knowledge of assigned product lines and technical expertise in underwriting concepts, practices, procedures, and techniques.

Responsibilities

Assist Underwriters and Regional Managers in underwriting new and renewal business accounts by reviewing and analyzing insured’s (or prospective insured’s) loss history, financials, and other pertinent information.

Hold authority and assist in managing complex accounts and handling referrals from underwriting teams as needed.

Serve as a liaison between Underwriting and support functions such as Claims, Legal, Product/Underwriting Strategy, and the Office of Underwriting.

Assist in the creation, review, evaluation, cascade, and recommended modifications to underwriting guidelines.

Lead monthly renewal huddles and new business roundtables to facilitate topline growth while fostering staff development in areas of critical thinking, technical acumen, and solution orientation.

Provide significant input to the development of product capabilities, services, and geographic focus.

Communicate with other product line leaders to provide high‑level customer service.

Review and help negotiate policy terms and conditions.

Assist other members of the business, including Underwriters, Account Analysts, and Regional Managers, in product line and/or technical knowledge and development.

Perform related duties as requested, including market/broker/insured engagement, report preparation, presentations, and special projects to ensure the success of the various product lines.

Share all aspects related to the bottom‑line performance of the various product lines.

Qualifications

Degree in Business or equivalent typically required.

Minimum of 10 years progressive underwriting experience expected, including at least 2 years of proven underwriting management experience (preferred).

CPCU or other professional insurance designation preferred.

Proven analytical ability to evaluate high‑impact underwriting risks within the scope of responsibility.

Demonstrated ability to communicate complex analyses and information.

Effective communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with internal and external partners required.

Strong leadership, development of people, strategic thinking, portfolio management, profitable growth, decision‑making, results‑orientation, industriousness, innovation, problem‑solving, coaching, mentoring, and negotiating skills.

Pay Philosophy The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range reflects the competitive labor market value across the national market and provides an opportunity for progression as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual may include a compensation plan with commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
