Program Manager, Sustainability Communications & Engagement Location: San Jose, CA

Job Type: Full-Time

We are seeking a sustainability communications and employee engagement expert to join our corporate sustainability team. This role will be responsible for developing and implementing ESG communication strategies that amplify stakeholder value, engaging employees to drive change management through strategic activities and events, and designing programs to embed sustainability into key business functions and decisions.

The ideal candidate will be an expert communicator with deep understanding of ESG frameworks, concepts, and change theories, combined with strong capabilities to engage employees and influence cross‑functional groups without direct authority.

Key Responsibilities

Sustainability communications

Develop and implement robust communication strategies that build trust, drive engagement, and enhance reputation.

Collaborate with Marketing, PR, and Communications to develop timely, meaningful and high‑quality assets, including blogs, press releases, white papers, and thought leadership articles.

Develop resources and templates to enable Sales and support customer‑facing sustainability communications.

Manage, maintain, and update content and resources on WD sustainability websites.

Support development of sustainability program decks, presentations, and artifacts.

Drive strategy, programming, and narratives for sustainability efforts at key industry conferences and company events.

Employee engagement, education, and trainings

Organize events and activities to engage and mobilize employees for sustainability causes.

Design employee‑facing sustainability training and education programs, driving high participation rates and concrete actions.

Create and promote employee‑facing sustainability resources, including playbooks, toolkits, and how‑to guides.

Establish a sustainability‑focused Employee Resource Group (ERG) and relevant charter to help educate and engage the broader organization.

Embed sustainability into business operations and decisions

Build strong relationships with sustainability champions in all business functions.

Engage all functions to identify and incubate ESG‑related change management opportunities, establish business cases, and develop meaningful and actionable commitments and KPIs in alignment with business goals and values.

Track, quantify, and communicate the value and impacts of sustainability initiatives.

Integrate sustainability commitments and KPIs into relevant teams' annual planning and goal‑setting processes.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, environmental science, sustainability, or a related field. Master’s degree is a plus.

7+ years of experience in ESG communication and engagement.

Sustainability domain knowledge and expertise (climate, environment, water, circularity, etc.).

Proven record in developing effective communication strategies and generating high‑impact content and stories for all key audiences.

Experience in sustainability training design and technical writing.

Experience in mobilizing a large group of employees and organizing sustainability activities.

Experience in developing business cases and driving change management efforts.

Excellent project management skills, and ability to execute in a complex, fast‑paced large corporate environment.

Natural affinity to be reflective, to learn from challenges, and demonstrate resilience.

Highly motivated, self‑starter, results‑oriented with the ability to work on multiple deliverables at the same time and drive projects to completion.
