Position Summary Reporting to the CEO, the Chief Schools Officer (CSO) is responsible for the comprehensive implementation of KIPP NorCal’s TK-12 program, encompassing academics, instruction, school culture, special education, multilingual learners, and social-emotional learning. The CSO ensures joyful, academically excellent schools for all KIPP NorCal students and oversees the college‑preparatory high‑school program that integrates with our KIPP Forward alumni program.

The CSO manages a team that includes the Deputy Chief Schools Officer, Managing Directors of Schools, and Managing Director of Academics. In this senior leadership role, the CSO disrupts racial and socioeconomic inequities in educational access and outcomes by setting and upholding an excellence bar for teaching and learning; ensures the right people, systems, and structures drive student achievement; facilitates inclusive, positive school cultures; and advances a cohesive systematic approach to all facets of school management.

Ideal candidates possess extensive school and executive leadership experience, including a track record of success as School Leader and School Leader manager, and deep expertise in systems building, talent development, cross‑functional collaboration, and team leadership.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities Contribute to a High-Trust, High-Performance Org-Wide Senior Leadership Team

Co‑create conditions for high performance and health across the organization.

Partner with senior leadership to break down silos, communicate effectively, address challenges, empower decision‑making, and win priorities.

Set direction for high‑impact school support; align resources cross‑functionally to provide excellent service.

Build systems that gather stakeholder feedback to inform school support and improvement strategies.

Ensure organization‑wide systems support teaching and learning vision, including planning, budgeting, goal‑setting, monitoring, PD, Communities of Practice, and MTSS.

Ensure schools implement agreed‑upon non‑instructional best practices and maintain strong relationships that mitigate risk.

Represent KIPP NorCal and its values with stakeholders across the network.

Lead Highly Effective Team to Ensure High-Performing Schools

Share management and supervision with Deputy CSO for Managing Directors of Schools, who work directly with School Leaders.

Set goals and expectations so the Managing Director teams share a common vision for operationalizing joyful, academically excellent schools across TK‑12.

Build capacity in direct reports through weekly check‑ins, observations, and relevant feedback.

Review regional student and teacher data to quickly identify and address concerns.

Hold team members accountable for development, support, and results of School Leaders, including compliance with laws and policies.

Support direct reports in challenges such as climate, culture, performance, and parent concerns.

Set Vision for Joyful, Academically Excellent Schools & Ensure Its Successful Implementation

Oversee high‑quality implementation of our vision for joyful, academically excellent schools to School and Regional Leaders.

Partner strategically across functions to ensure sustainability, measurability, and operational feasibility.

Foster collaboration among the Lead Learning, Schools, Culture, and Special Education teams.

Regularly visit schools to monitor implementation of teaching and learning vision.

Align and coordinate resources across Academics, Culture, Special Education, and other teams; collaborate cross‑functionally, problem‑solve, and remove barriers.

Steward budgets and resources efficiently in alignment with vision and policy.

Stay aware of promising practices and innovations in teaching, learning, and school design.

Liaise with the national KIPP Foundation to align with the One KIPP vision.

Physical, Mental, and Environmental Demands Physical: Ability to navigate office and campuses, hold meetings in various spaces, and use technology. Occasional lifting of equipment (1‑5 lbs) and physical agility for movement activities. Mental: Manage deadlines, analyze problems, and concentrate for long periods. Environmental: Frequent classroom/school visits across 23 sites; office environment with interruptions. Adhere to KIPP health and safety guidelines.

Classification This is a full‑time, exempt position based on a full‑year calendar cycle. The role is located in the Regional Support Office, with frequent travel to schools (at least one day in Oakland and at least three days in the field).

Compensation KIPP Northern California offers a competitive salary ($230,000 – $260,000) and a comprehensive benefits package (medical, dental, vision, transportation). The benchmarked salary is $245,000.

Preferred Qualifications Experience

Deep experience in designing, integrating, implementing, and managing high‑performing schools and systems.

Minimum 2 years managing School Leaders in K‑12, with measurable results.

Minimum 4 years as School Leader/Principal, with measurable results.

Success leading system‑wide improvement and change management closing achievement gaps.

Proven track record of leading, motivating, and developing diverse high‑performing teams.

Education

Bachelor’s Degree or higher.

Knowledge/Skills Required
