Senior Tax Manager – Upstream
Base pay range
$160,000.00/yr - $200,000.00/yr
Responsibilities
Lead and review complex federal and multi-state tax returns for upstream E&P clients, mineral interest owners, and joint venture structures.
Provide advanced technical guidance on upstream-specific issues, including: IDC (Intangible Drilling Costs) capitalization vs. expensing, Depletion (cost and percentage), G&G (Geological & Geophysical) costs, Revenue allocation by well/lease and production-based tax calculations, Joint interest accounting, carried interests, and WI/RI/NPI structures, Lease acquisition costs, drilling programs, and AMI agreements.
Advise owner-operators, HNW families, and energy investors on structuring, succession planning, family partnerships, and tax minimization strategies.
Support clients through drilling programs, acquisitions, divestitures, asset swaps, and restructuring of upstream portfolios.
Serve as the primary point of contact for client communication, planning, and issue resolution.
Develop and mentor staff, seniors, and managers; ensuring quality, accuracy, and technical excellence.
Contribute to practice development through networking, client expansion, and industry involvement in the Houston upstream community.
Qualifications
8–12+ years of tax experience in public accounting, with significant exposure to upstream/E&P clients.
Strong technical expertise in IDC, depletion, production-based revenue recognition, and regional/state regimes impacting upstream operations.
Experience working with privately held E&P companies, operating groups, and energy-focused family offices.
CPA required; MST or JD/LLM preferred.
Proven leadership, team development, and client relationship management skills.
Ability to communicate complex tax concepts clearly to executives and high-net-worth owners.
