Overview

Brief Job Description (essential Functions of the Job): Under general supervision, performs skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of Boston Fire Department motor vehicles and/or equipment, and may service other commercial motor vehicles, along with related tasks.
Responsibilities: Examines and locates mechanical defects in motor equipment including fire engines, ladder trucks, special equipment, other commercial vehicles, and passenger vehicles. Performs preventative and scheduled maintenance, as well as bumper-to-bumper analysis. Disassembles, repairs, replaces worn parts, adjusts engines, oil, water, and fuel systems, and uses welding equipment for fabrication and repair. Maintains records of work performed.
Minimum Entrance Qualifications:
- At least two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in maintenance and repair of gasoline, diesel, or alternative fuel equipment. Trade school certification may substitute for experience.
- Skill in using automotive repair tools and welding equipment.
- Ability to diagnose defects and repair various automotive and specialty equipment.
- OEM or ASE certification required; professional experience may substitute initially, but certification must be obtained within six months.
- Preferred EVT certification Fire Apparatus Level I, to be obtained within 12 months of hire.
- Valid Massachusetts CDL Class B with air brake endorsement; Hoisting License preferred and must be obtained within six months.
- Ability to be certified in refrigerant recycling and service procedures.
- Computer operation skills required.
- Good judgment and attention to detail.
Individuals must complete Civil Service registration and City of Boston application. Boston residency required. Pre-employment drug test required.
Terms: Civil Service applicants preferred. Union/Salary Plan/Grade: AFSCME/RA1-16. Hours/week: 40.
