Heavy Equipment Diesel Mechanic – Dobbs Equipment, LLC
Summary of Primary Functions
Dobbs Equipment is seeking an experienced Shop Service Technician. Technicians are responsible for the repair, diagnosis, overhaul, and reconditioning maintenance of customer and company heavy equipment and components. Depending on the location and assignment, the technician will be responsible for some or all of the functions and duties listed below. Repairs may require additional hours for emergency calls or routine service as required. The job description does not include a complete listing of all duties; management reserves the right to assign other duties as necessary.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Follow all safety rules and regulations while maintaining a safe work environment.
- Recondition, repair, service, and assemble machines/industrial equipment.
- Diagnose problems and determine repairs needed.
- Perform inspections as required.
- Check and report shortages and malfunctions to the Service Manager.
- Maintain records and account for all time, parts, and supplies used.
- Handle customer problems objectively and tactfully.
- Assist in directing work of helpers or trainees, providing instructions as required.
- Complete disassembly and inspection efficiently to schedule repairs.
- Perform all service tasks assigned by the Service Manager, Supervisor, or Shop Foreman.
- Prepare all reports and forms required with job assignments.
- Report additional work to ensure proper operation and safety of equipment.
- Participate in service training programs.
- Maintain a clean work area and perform work in a neat and orderly fashion.
- Notify Service Manager of any shop tools, equipment, or vehicle that is unsafe or not serviceable.
- Represent the dealership as a professional Service Technician at all times.
- Operate trucks and equipment with extreme care and caution.
- Maintain and care for shop tools, equipment, vehicles, and other employee belongings.
- Report to work on time, as scheduled.
- Work up to 12‑hour days, varying shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Operate company vehicles and follow motor‑vehicle state safety laws (if necessary).
- Adhere to safety policies of Dobbs Equipment and clients.
Qualification
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Knowledge of industrial equipment maintenance and operation.
- Ability to perform basic repairs using special tools and equipment following Technical Manual procedures.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment safely around the shop.
Education, Skill, and/or Experience Requirements
- Associate degree or equivalent from a two‑year college or technical school, or at least 2 years related experience.
- Stay current with technical changes.
- Proficient knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
- Maintain current product knowledge of John Deere and competitive products.
- Forklift certification (preferred).
- Effective communication with teammates.
- Strong problem‑solving skills.
- Excellent time‑management skills.
- Self‑motivation and self‑management.
- Flexible schedule (weekends/overtime).
- Read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Write diagnoses and complete routine reports and correspondence.
- Apply common sense in carrying out written, oral, or diagram instructions.
- Develop skills in disassembly, assembly, and repair of components and machines.
- Basic arithmetic skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
- Quick learner with creative thinking.
- Limited overnight travel (<5%) for training.
- Bilingual a plus.
Work Environment
Regularly works in a service shop setting with changing temperatures, wet/humid conditions, noise, vibration, fumes, odors, dust, and close proximity to moving mechanical parts.
Physical Demands
- Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, welding shields, hard hats, vests, safety glasses, goggles, gloves, etc.
- Full range of motion for back, arms, hands, and fingers.
- Full range of motion for legs, including climbing, twisting, squatting, and pushing.
- Use hand tools, fuel hoses, lubrication systems on all equipment.
- Climb onto or down from mobile construction equipment (typically 3‑4 feet).
- Lift or carry loads from 50 lbs to 75 lbs.
- Maintain specific vision abilities (close, distance, color).
- Communicate at moderate noise levels.
