About Us Northside Charter High School is a small, public charter school located in the North Williamsburg/ Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. We are a college preparatory high school with a mission to prepare students for college. Through our unique approach to instruction, we provide scholars in grades 9-12 with an education that results in mastery of the New York State Learning Standards, on-time high school graduation, and readiness to take college courses in high school. About the Role Northside Charter High School is seeking a Guidance Counselor who will ensure that every student experiences a joyful and engaging learning experience. This person will report directly to the Director of Strategy and Guidance and will be part of Northside’s Student Services Team, who are directly responsible for building a culture and environment that supports instructional excellence across all classrooms, inclusive of rigor, motivation, authentic student engagement, and student ownership of learning. You will join a team that focuses on building a sense of community, and owns the school’s social‑emotional framework, creating the campus vision, community engagement, and creating culture systems that foster a healthy and safe working environment.
Key Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To:
Collect, classify, manage, evaluate, secure, certify, and disseminate student records in accordance with Northside standards, professional practices, and legal procedures.
Provides assistance with school & student schedules, class rosters and grades, as well as any changes to these within the school year.
Assist with the coordination of scheduling, to ensure that adequate space is available for classes, exams, and eligible non‑academic functions.
Assist assigned students with developing academic, career and personal/social skills, goals, and plans.
Coordinate assigned counseling services for students.
Perform individual mandated and crisis counseling, referral, and family outreach.
Utilize data to determine college readiness and to determine interventions needed to assist students as they access post high school options.
Work with separate committees to formulate plans of support for students in need.
Attend weekly student intervention meetings.
Participation in all required school activities such as Caregiver Conferences, Professional Development, and Graduation.
Participation in at least three (3) extracurricular school community activities and events such as Prom, Homecoming, and/or Caregiver Association Meetings.
Other responsibilities as required or assigned by the Director of Guidance and Strategy and/or Chief Student Services Officer.
Model how to build strong, mutually respectful relationships with students and families and support teachers to do the same.
Support in school‑wide systems such as Arrival, Lunch, and Dismissal with an eye for student safety and inclusiveness.
Develop, Monitor, and Lead attendance plans for students who are chronically absent.
Successful Candidates Should
Master's Degree from an accredited college or institution Preferred.
Certified as a School Counselor/Guidance Counselor by the State of New York preferred.
Familiarity with the PowerSchool is a plus.
Knowledge of current research and trends in school counseling and guidance.
Knowledge of crisis prevention and arbitration techniques.
Ability to analyze data.
Relationship‑building; must show evidence of building and leveraging strong relationships.
Excellent skills of organization and follow‑through.
