Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) invites applications and nominations for the inaugural
President, Washington University Faculty Practice Plan and Washington University Physicians of Illinois, as well as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Clinical Affairs .
WUSM is seeking a visionary and accomplished physician executive to serve as the inaugural President of the Faculty Practice Plan (FPP), Washington University Physicians of Illinois, and the Associate Vice Chancellor for Clinical Affairs (the “President”). This newly created position offers an opportunity to lead one of the nation’s largest and most respected academic physician groups at a pivotal moment of growth and transformation. With over 2,000 clinicians across 78 specialties and subspecialties, WashU Medicine Physicians deliver more than 2.6 million patient encounters annually across Missouri and Illinois. The practice has doubled its patient volume and added $1 billion in revenue over the past nine years, with continued expansion underway. The President will be instrumental in shaping the next chapter of this success story—driving strategic alignment, operational excellence, and clinical innovation across a rapidly evolving landscape.
The President will serve as the senior executive leader of both the Faculty Practice Plan and Washington University Physicians of Illinois, overseeing all aspects of clinical operations, strategic planning, financial performance, and quality improvement. This individual will work in close partnership with department heads, university, and hospital leadership to ensure the delivery of exceptional patient care, while advancing the academic mission of WUSM. They will be a dynamic leader who can navigate complexity, foster collaboration across departments, and champion initiatives that enhance patient experience, physician engagement, and system‑wide performance. Serving as a key member of the CEO’s Faculty Practice Plan leadership cabinet, they will work closely with the President, Washington University Clinical Associates and the President of the BJC Medical Group. They will also provide executive leadership and direct oversight of key senior leaders, including the Chief Information Officer (BJC/WUSM), Chief Nursing Officer, Chief Medical Officer, Senior Director of Credentialing and Contracting, Senior Director of Rate Analysis and Contracting, and the Executive Director of Physician Billing.
The ideal candidate will be a highly respected physician leader with dynamic leadership skills and proven administrative expertise. They must bring deep experience in revenue cycle management and managed care contracting, along with the ability to navigate complex healthcare environments and foster collaboration across diverse stakeholders. An advanced degree in management is strongly preferred. In addition, a working knowledge of Epic and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, to drive operational efficiency and innovation is preferred. This leader will combine strategic vision with a collaborative approach, ensuring unity and alignment across the WashU Physicians Faculty Practice, BJC HealthCare, and affiliated hospitals.
Qualified candidates will hold a medical degree (MD, MD/PhD or equivalent), be board certified in their specialty, and have a long track record as an established clinician. Candidates must be eligible for a faculty appointment at the Professor level in the Washington University School of Medicine.
