Join the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community as our Legal Counsel. In this role you support the Deputy General Legal Counsel with legal activities and functions for the SMSC at the direction of and in collaboration with the General Legal Counsel and Deputy General Legal Counsel. The ideal fit has strong writing and legal research skills.

Job Overview Provides legal services for and on behalf of the Community as in‑house attorney. Supports other attorneys in contract law, employment law, intellectual property and trademark law, government relations, gaming law, and legal research. Works on issues related to the daily operation of the Community’s government departments and enterprises, and appears before federal, state, and tribal courts (excluding claims against the United States), government agencies, and legislative bodies.

Responsibilities

Assist the Deputy General Legal Counsel with legal activities and functions for the SMSC.

Review and draft a variety of transactional documents and contracts for gaming and non‑gaming enterprises and government departments.

Support other attorneys in employment law, intellectual property and trademark law, government relations, gaming law, and legal research.

Job Requirements

Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.

Licensed to practice law in Minnesota or able to obtain Minnesota license within six months of hire.

At least 3 years of professional legal experience.

Knowledge of Federal Indian law, employment law, and commercial transactions preferred.

Strong writing and legal research skills.

Capacity to handle and lift up to 25 lbs. as needed.
