Position Description
The Division of VA General Surgery in the Department Surgery at the University of Washington, School of Medicine is accepting applications and nominations for a General Surgeon at the VA Puget Sound Healthcare System in Seattle. The faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor without tenure by reason of funding (WOT), Associate Professor WOT, or Professor WOT. Assistant Professors are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Associate Professors WOT and Professors WOT hold indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. This position will have an anticipated start date in Summer/Fall 2026.
The position will be based at the Veteran’s Affairs Puget Sound Healthcare System. The General Surgeon’s clinical responsibilities include a spectrum of broad-based general surgery (e.g., hernia repair, cholecystectomy, benign anorectal disease, et al.), ideally together with subspecialty expertise in surgical critical care. This position will provide direct patient care in an outpatient clinic, inpatient/ICU setting, operating room, emergency department and other locations as deemed necessary by the Chief of Surgery or Facility leadership.
In addition to clinical practice, the position will directly participate in the education of surgical residents and medical students. The position will be expected to develop an area of scholarly expertise, as expected of every faculty member, in consultation with the Division and Section Chiefs. The VA Puget Sound Healthcare System is a nationally recognized academic medical center offering outstanding specialty and primary care.
At the rank of Assistant Professor (WOT) the base salary for this position will be $27,917-$31,250 per month ($335,004-$375,000 per year). At the rank of Associate Professor (WOT) the base salary range for this position will be $28,750-$33,334 per month ($345,000-$400,008 per year). At the rank of Professor (WOT) the base salary range for this position will be $29,584-$33,334 per month ($355,008-$400,008 per year). Base salaries at all ranks will be commensurate with candidate experience and qualifications. Compensation may include up to $15,000 in Annual Performance Bonus, and candidates may be eligible for a recruitment or relocation bonus. The Department of Veterans Affairs provides a comprehensive benefits package including 5 weeks of paid annual leave per year, robust health and dental insurance plans, a federal 401K plan with matching contributions, and a federal pension.
This position is paid directly by the VA Puget Sound Health Care System and receives no UW compensation. Please refer to the VA for information about compensation for this position.
Qualifications
Prospective candidates must have an MD (or foreign equivalent)
Certified or eligible for certification by the American Board of Surgery
Licensed to practice medicine in Washington by the time of appointment
