Reality Lab (RL) at Meta’s legal group seeks an experienced, highly motivated attorney to join as Lead Counsel to support RL Insights, and related cross‑functional teams across our product lines. Reality Labs is building the next generation of computing devices to bring the world together and make people feel closer. This includes Quest and Wearable products, AR and VR software and hardware, and the metaverse. Success in this position will require applying a complex and evolving global legal framework to new and innovative tech products and services. In this role, you will provide legal advice and counsel to the RL Insights teams, review research proposals, and review products, features, and initiatives to inform on product research, usability, development, and improvement while balancing important priorities. You will help to ensure legal compliance with privacy laws and other legal requirements across multiple jurisdictions. This is a unique opportunity to work on cutting‑edge issues in a deadline‑driven environment. The ideal candidate will provide front‑line legal support with demonstrated experience in collaborative communication, drafting, and negotiation skills working collaboratively with legal colleagues and business partners across the organization.
Responsibilities
Research and privacy counseling, providing direct support to RL Insights research teams, reviewing and analyzing research plans, research studies, study reports/findings for privacy and other legal risk and compliance issues, and drafting research, legal, and operational policies, playbooks, frameworks, and other guidance
Commercial transactions, providing direct support to RL Insights research teams, drafting and negotiating vendor agreements, confidentiality and non‑disclosure agreements, and help structure and implement research programs and their related policies, procedures, and terms and conditions
Academic and policy engagements, providing direct support to RL Insights research teams for research and product collaborations and agreements with academic institutions and policy organizations
Provide and coordinate legal advice and education to RL Insights research teams, and other business teams across complex and multifaceted legal issues including regulatory compliance, privacy, sensitive data, data governance, competition, and intellectual property issues
Act as a trusted partner and subject matter expert on RL Insights research across all product lines
Build positive and influential relationships with executives, product teams, and peers in Reality Labs and across the family of Meta companies
Lead consensus‑building and drive coordination with other members of Legal and business teams in Reality Labs and across the family of Meta companies
Minimum Qualifications
J.D. degree (or foreign equivalent)
Active membership in at least one U.S. state bar and eligibility to obtain registered in‑house counsel status
5+ years of legal experience as a practicing attorney, including at a law firm and/or in‑house or government experience
Experience with regulatory or privacy law or research counseling
Experience working independently and cross‑functionally
Experience working on multiple projects at once in a deadline‑driven environment
Proven problem‑solving and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
Experience providing commercial, privacy, or product counseling for large technology company or technology sector
Prior experience advising on use, sharing, collection and analysis of data including data governance
Prior in‑house experience
Regulatory experience in any area, but privacy background preferred
Experience building scalable legal functions and processes, e.g. frameworks, playbooks, product guidance
