Senior Planner, Campus Planning
Reporting to the Executive Director of Campus Planning, the Senior Planner will support Boston University's (BU) overall mission of education and research. As a key member of Planning, Design and Construction (PDC), this position will serve BU’s entire real‑estate portfolio, which includes nearly 15 million square feet and over 140 acres of land. The Planning team leads physical planning, programming, and placemaking that supports BU’s mission. The Senior Planner will bring a holistic approach rooted in BU’s strategic vision and values, balanced with technical and regulatory requirements. This role works closely with academic and auxiliary partners for short‑ and long‑term planning, enabling emerging research directions, changes in educational delivery, and enhancements to student life and learning. The Senior Planner will also be integral to the public approvals process, working with stakeholders such as Government and Community Affairs, the Office of General Counsel, Facilities Maintenance & Operations, and Sustainability leadership to strategically address asset renewal for BU’s urban campus environment.
Responsibilities & Scope
Space programming and planning, leveraging strong verbal, written, and graphic communication skills.
Identify strategic opportunities to align programmatic goals with aesthetic and infrastructure renewal of campus buildings.
Manage and coordinate multiple relationships while maintaining BU’s priorities.
Coordinate the public approvals process, preparing documents for review by the Public Improvements Commission, Parks Department, and other entities.
Collaborate with Facilities Maintenance, Operations, and Sustainability leadership on asset renewal initiatives.
Qualifications (Minimum)
Master’s Degree with 8+ years of related experience (or equivalent).
Background from design and/or development industry, including landscape architecture, urban planning, or civil engineering, with a focus on higher education or institutional portfolio management.
Proven ability to negotiate and balance expectations of demanding constituencies while keeping BU’s priorities in view.
Ability to achieve results with limited direction, showing initiative and managing multiple relationships effectively in a team environment.
Robust knowledge of the City of Boston zoning, planning, and design regulations as they relate to planning and pre‑design studies; prior experience preparing documents for public review is a plus.
Required Skills
Advanced skills with GIS and/or CAD software packages (AutoCAD), spreadsheets (Excel), and analytic tools (GIS/PowerBI).
Extensive computer experience in word processing software and comfort navigating CAFM systems.
Interpersonal Skills
Team‑oriented and comfortable in a fast‑paced, high‑performance setting.
Strong verbal and graphic communication skills to discuss topics ranging from species diversity to water management.
Creativity, adaptability, attention to detail, and strong interpersonal skills.
