Role: Senior Backend Developer - Data Services (Scala)
Location: Denver, CO (hybrid – 4 days/week from office)
Duration: 06-12 months
Overview We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Scala Backend Developer to join our Data Services team. The ideal candidate will have strong experience building high-performance backend systems, working with distributed data pipelines, and developing scalable microservices. This role involves working closely with data engineering, architecture, and product teams to build robust, secure, and efficient backend services.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain Scala-based backend services supporting data-intensive applications.
Build and optimize distributed systems, data pipelines, and high-throughput services.
Implement microservices using Scala, Akka, Play Framework, or similar technologies.
Collaborate with data engineering teams to integrate with data warehouses, streaming pipelines, and analytics systems.
Write clean, testable, and scalable code following best practices.
Develop APIs (REST / GraphQL) and ensure smooth integration with front-end and data systems.
Work with cloud platforms (AWS / GCP / Azure) to deploy and manage backend services.
Optimize performance, reliability, and scalability of systems.
Troubleshoot production issues and contribute to continuous improvement.
Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and mentoring junior developers.
Required Skills & Qualifications
6–10+ years of backend development experience, with strong focus on Scala.
Hands‑on experience with Functional Programming concepts.
Experience with Akka, Play Framework, ZIO, Cats, or similar Scala libraries.
Strong knowledge of building microservices and distributed systems.
Experience working with SQL/NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, Cassandra, MongoDB, etc.).
Familiarity with data streaming technologies such as Kafka, Spark, Flink, or similar.
Strong experience with RESTful APIs and messaging systems.
Hands‑on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines.
Strong understanding of scalability, concurrency, and multithreading.
Cloud experience (AWS/GCP/Azure).
Excellent communication and problem‑solving skills.
