Senior Environmental Planner – Bay Area Air District
Position Summary: This full‑time, represented position belongs to the Planning and Climate Protection Division. The role leads environmental planning efforts and supports regional air quality and climate initiatives, with a focus on equity and justice in over‑burdened communities.
Definition Under direction, provides lead direction to environmental planning staff and conducts complex long‑range planning for land use and environmental assessments; performs related work as assigned.
Distinguishing Characteristics This advanced lead level involves highly specialized planning functions, program design, and independent judgment. It differs from the Principal Environmental Planner, who is responsible for creating new projects and handling the most difficult, sensitive, novel or critical projects.
What You'll Be Doing
Serve as a thought leader integrating air quality, health, equity, and environmental justice.
Develop and implement regional and community‑based plans to accelerate air pollution and greenhouse gas emission reductions.
Support local governments in advancing health‑protective and equitable air quality and climate plans and policy.
Build strong working relationships and collaborations with community‑based organizations, community members, local governments, regional, state and federal agency partners.
Perform other duties as required, including researching administrative and technical activities, interfacing with agencies, and leading environmental impact assessments.
Example of Duties
Analyze issues, prepare reports and recommendations on land use, regional development, and related issues.
Conduct research and interfaces with local, state and federal agencies.
Coordinate with personnel from other divisions and agencies and community organizations.
Provide lead direction, training, and work review to professional environmental planners.
Participate in preparation of non‑attainment area plans.
Lead and review environmental impact assessments and District Lead Agency documents.
Monitor and evaluate legislation and other governmental actions, developing recommendations.
Represent the District in inquiries and with governmental officials, consultants, and the public.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a college or university with a graduate degree in regional, urban, or environmental planning or a closely related field and at least three years of professional environmental planning experience. Additional relevant experience may substitute for the graduate degree.
Other Requirements
Willingness to attend meetings outside regular working hours.
