Physician – Substance Use Disorder Clinical Psychiatrist The psychiatrist is assigned to the Substance Use Disorders (SUD) Clinic within the Mental Health Service. The staff psychiatrist will diagnose substance use disorders as well as general psychiatric disorders through a variety of modalities and provide adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders.

Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

United States citizenship; non‑citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.

The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth or the District of Columbia.

Residency training: physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

Notes: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.

Allowed residencies include: (1) ACGME‑approved; (2) AOA‑approved; (3) Other residencies (non‑U.S. residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) considered appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.

Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA‑accredited residency training programs who meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs).

PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (not a training license) and may be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis.

PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and do not hold privileges.

PRPs have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.

Additional: Surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.

Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements: This position requires a pre‑employment physical. Eligible applicants must be physically and mentally able to perform efficiently the essential functions of the position – with or without reasonable accommodation – without hazard to themselves or others.

Duties

Provide a full range of psychiatric services, diagnosing substance use disorders and co‑occurring general psychiatric disorders in complex and challenging patients.

Develop, implement, and document psychotherapeutic treatment plans for an assigned caseload of patients, including completion of clinical reminders and VA‑approved mental health treatment plans.

Participate in Outpatient Withdrawal Management and Addiction Stabilization Clinic (OWMAS) as appropriate based on location.

Determine appropriate level of withdrawal care; initiate and manage medications for alcohol withdrawal in the outpatient setting; initiate buprenorphine and provide timely follow‑up for transitional patients.

Provide consultation to professional staff within the SUD Clinic and other programs in the Mental Health Service.

Serve as a member of the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System Medical Staff with full clinical privileges and assume complete professional responsibility for clinical assessment findings, patient‑care decisions, and documentation.

Provide outreach services to veterans and family members.

Offer clinical supervision and instruction for psychiatry residents, medical students, or other prescribing disciplines in the outpatient clinic and during on‑call periods.

Assist the program director or coordinator in designing, developing, and implementing clinical programs, and participate in quality‑improvement projects to monitor program effectiveness.

Facilitate liaison with other health‑care programs to coordinate services.

Comply with operational policies, performance measures, and documentation standards, including timely health‑care screening, clinical reminders, and CPRS documentation procedures.

Attend and participate in administrative meetings, service line director and facility director sessions, mental health staff meetings, and peer‑review procedures.

Perform required call schedules as appropriate.

Compensation and Benefits

Competitive salary ($230,000–$315,000 per year) with annual performance bonus and regular salary increases.

50–55 days of paid time off per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, and up to 5 days for CME).

Traditional federal pension with 5 years vesting and federal 401(k) with up to 5% matching contributions.

Health, vision, dental, term life, and long‑term care insurance available; many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement.

Full licensure support and CME reimbursement (possible $1,000 per year for full‑time, board‑certified physicians).

Malpractice coverage: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided.

No physician employment contract with significant restrictions on moonlighting.

Work schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) eligibility: Student‑loan repayment up to $200,000 for 1–5 years. Eligible applicants must apply within four months of appointment. Former EDRP participants are ineligible.
