The National Library of Medicine (NLM) Office of Computer and Communications Systems (OCCS) is seeking an enthusiastic AI/ML Fresher to join our team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects that leverage artificial intelligence and machine learning to enhance biomedical information systems. You will collaborate with experienced engineers and data scientists to build intelligent solutions that improve interoperability, search, and user experience across NLM platforms.
What You Will Do
Assist in developing and deploying AI/ML models for biomedical data processing and search optimization.
Support natural language processing (NLP) tasks, including entity recognition and semantic search.
Work on data preprocessing, feature engineering, and model evaluation under guidance from senior team members.
Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to integrate AI components into existing applications and APIs.
Document workflows, maintain code repositories, and contribute to testing and validation efforts.
What You Will Need
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field.
Minimum TWO (2)+ years of professional experience, preferably in AI/ML development or related software engineering role.
Strong foundation in Python programming and familiarity with libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikit‑learn.
Experience with machine learning concepts (classification, regression, clustering) and practical implementation.
Exposure to NLP techniques and libraries (e.g., NLTK, spaCy, Hugging Face Transformers).
Knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and version control (Git).
Excellent problem‑solving skills and eagerness to learn new technologies.
Must be eligible for a Public Trust clearance and complete federal background screening.
What Would Be Nice To Have
Familiarity with AWS cloud platforms and containerization (Docker).
Understanding of RESTful APIs and web application integration.
Understanding of DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines.
Coursework or projects involving AI in healthcare or biomedical domains.
The annual salary range for this position is $74,000.00‑$124,000.00. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
