Job Summary:
The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing heavy-duty vehicles and equipment used in waste collection and processing operations. This includes compactors, loaders, dozers, excavators, roll-off trucks, and other waste-handling machinery. The mechanic ensures that all equipment operates safely and efficiently to support uninterrupted operations and compliance with company standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform Preventive Maintenance: Conduct routine inspections, lubrication, adjustments, and services on heavy equipment according to company schedules and manufacturer recommendations.
- Diagnose and Repair Equipment: Identify mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical issues using diagnostic tools and repair equipment to OEM standards.
- Test and Verify Repairs: Safely operate equipment to confirm that issues are resolved and performance meets required specifications.
- Maintain Accurate Records: Document repairs, maintenance activities, and parts used in the company’s maintenance management system.
- Repair and Replace Components: Service engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, brakes, and other key components.
- Ensure Safety Compliance: Follow all company safety procedures, lockout/tagout practices, and PPE requirements at all times.
- Assist with Fabrication and Upgrades: Support installation of new components or modifications to improve performance and reliability.
- Support Field Operations: Perform maintenance and repairs both in the shop and in the field when equipment issues occur on route or at company sites.
Qualification & Experience:
- Education: High school diploma or GED required; technical school certification in heavy equipment or diesel mechanics preferred.
- Experience:
- Minimum 3 years of experience as a heavy equipment or diesel mechanic (preferably in waste, construction, or industrial environments).
- Strong knowledge of hydraulics, diesel engines, transmissions, and electrical systems.
- Licenses/Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license required (CDL preferred but not required).
- ASE or OEM certifications a plus.
- Skills:
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.
- Proficiency with diagnostic software and tools.
- Welding and fabrication experience preferred.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
- Basic computer literacy for maintenance tracking systems.
Working Conditions:
- Full-time position, Monday through Friday 8am – 5pm (hours may vary, alternating Saturdays)
- On Site
- Work may be performed indoors in a shop environment or outdoors in field conditions.
- Exposure to loud noises, heavy equipment, grease, fumes, and moving machinery.
- Frequent standing, bending, lifting (up to 75 lbs), and working in confined or elevated spaces.
- May require working weekends, holidays, or extended hours during peak maintenance periods.
