In this role, you will be responsible leading the team that enables Apache Cassandra to work seamlessly with platform infrastructure across all of Apple. This includes deep integration with technologies like Apache Spark and Apache Kafka, enabling teams to build hybrid OLTP/OLAP applications and event-driven streaming systems.You will be joining, developing, and leading a team of experts working at the latest of modern database technology, distributed systems, and storage engineering in open source. The team's work is deployed at massive scale. It also has big impact, providing the storage platform upon which many iCloud, Media, and other internet services at Apple are built. Your work will benefit all users of Apple products and is critical to the success of current and future offerings.

Description Apple’s Cassandra organization develops storage systems that are scalable and efficient that perfectly complement application and analytics technologies across the company. This work requires an innovative spirit and an extraordinary degree of care and rigor in engineering. Team members contribute to all major components of Apache Cassandra in open source.

Responsibilities As a leader in this organization, you will lead, develop, and grow a team responsible for Cassandra’s integration with platform technologies across Apple. These include Change Data Capture and Event Streaming; Apache Spark read/write integration; bulk dataset replication and distribution; authentication technologies; and control plane services that orchestrate interaction between these systems.

Minimum Qualifications Data-Intensive Applications: A track record of building stable and scalable data-intensive applications that unify the streaming, storage, and analytical stack. Analytical Applications: Experience building analytical services atop Apache Spark. Streaming Applications: Experience integrating leading databases with Apache Kafka. Managing Migrations: Experience managing platform convergence and unification with minimal disruption. Ability to rapidly build credibility with engineers, customers, and partners and quickly learn new technical domains. Comfort working with geographically distributed partners. Expertise in project management, project planning, and making the unpredictable predictable. Advanced understanding of data structures and algorithms in storage and indexing. Proficient in modern Java. BS, MS, or Ph.D in Computer Science-related fields or equivalent work experience.

Preferred Qualifications Experience developing or leading work in distributed systems engineering. Experience developing open source software and interacting with OSS communities. Experience leading control plane services for running data plane infrastructure. Experience running or developing critical internet services / platform infrastructure. Understanding of distributed systems and database concepts (consistency models, isolation levels, crash and recovery semantics). Advanced concepts such as failure detection, smart clients, load balancing, request pipelining, speculation / retry policies, and operational semantics of high-performance distributed systems. Performance engineering (design concepts, profile-guided optimization). Testing concepts (fault injection, property-based testing and model checking, workload replay, quality metrics). This role also requires excellent communication, ability to partner with our Site Reliability peers, and a high degree of customer focus when engaging with internal platform customers. Ability to work effectively with colleagues based in other locations is also essential; experience in this area is a plus. Prior experience with development of distributed databases / storage systems is recommended

At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $198,300 and $342,800, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
