Position Overview Maya Angelou Public Charter School (MAPCS) is seeking a dedicated and experienced Security Associate to assume the role of Security Associate. The Security Associate reports directly to the Security Managers and supports the schools and organizations located at the Maya Angelou Learning Campus (MALC).
Responsibilities
Maintain a safe and supportive physical environment for students and staff
Investigate and report all security concerns and other emergency incidents on‑site and around the school's physical perimeter
Patrol school buildings and grounds for contraband and weapons
Investigate all criminal incidents on school property and prepare a written report for the action of school administration
Maintain high visibility in hallways, stairwells, and common spaces to discourage disruptive behavior
Maintain vigilance of suspected known problem areas
Collaborate with school administration around staff and student security awareness programs
Effectively operate security equipment (two‑way radio, metal detector, x‑ray machine, etc.)
Provide security presence during arrival and dismissal times
Serve as a member of the School Emergency Response Team
Use school behavioral data to address safety needs
Maintain building alarm codes and keys
Physical Demands / Special Requirements
Ability to intervene in elevated student behavior events
Ability to climb stairs and spend long periods of time walking and standing
Conduct routine building patrols to ensure safe onsite activities
Attend weekend events in order to support ongoing logistics
Keep abreast of the most recent security protocol, procedures, and best practices
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED required
Security Officer (SO)/Special Police Officer (SPO) License
5 years of security experience
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Non‑lethal disarming expertise
Proficiency in all Microsoft and Google applications
Demonstrated ability to prioritize competing priorities in a fast‑paced environment
Strong collaboration skills with colleagues in different departments
Preferred Knowledge
Associate's Degree in Criminology / Criminal Justice or law enforcement background preferred
Familiarity with DC charter school operations
Experience with School Emergency preparedness and procedures
Experience working with students, families, and staff from racially, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds
Salary and Benefits This role is temporary. Compensation will be a daily rate of $150.00‑$175.00.
Full‑Time Temporary employees receive four (4) hours of sick leave for every ten (10) days of time worked, up to three (3) days.
