Equipment Operator II – Department of Public Works

The City of Annapolis seeks a dedicated and skilled Equipment Operator II to operate heavy equipment such as front end loaders, mechanical street sweepers, Vac‑con trucks, snow plows, and sewer cameras. The role supports public works infrastructure, including sewage, water mains, and roadway maintenance. The position requires working outdoors in extreme weather conditions and availability for emergency overtime.

Responsibilities

  • Operate sewer cameras, dump trucks, backhoes, front end loaders, street sweepers and snow plows to maintain public safety.
  • Perform repairs on fire hydrants, patch asphalt, and complete contractor work as needed.
  • Operate dump trucks for salting and snow plowing operations during inclement weather.
  • Perform daily maintenance on the sewer system; operate sewer cameras and record findings.
  • Perform daily and weekly lubrication, maintenance, and adjustments on assigned equipment; maintain accurate daily work logs and vehicle checklists.
  • Secure job sites for safety, place safety signs, and operate equipment in compliance with traffic rules and safety standards.
  • Assist public works and refuse supervisors in planning and overseeing the work of others; maintain work logs and input data into the computer system.

Qualifications

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Sound judgment, tact, and courtesy.
  • Experience operating and maintaining heavy equipment such as backhoes, snow plows, trucks, and fleet equipment in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate and repair heavy or complex machinery and construction equipment.
  • Mechanical aptitude with ability to make repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Knowledge of traffic and safety rules.
  • Ability to read utility 1" (40' scale) maps and operating manuals.
  • Ability to operate small office equipment, including a computer, copy machine or multi-line telephone system.
  • Ability to plan, communicate, and monitor the work of others.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Experience: Two (2) years of related experience in the operation of, and/or maintenance of machinery and construction equipment.
  • Licensure: Valid Maryland Class “B” Commercial State Driver’s License with Endorsement N (Tank vehicle).
  • Screening: Consent to chemical substance screening consistent with mandated Federal, State, and City guidelines and programs, including random drug or alcohol tests.

Working Conditions

  • Work outside year-round; be available for emergency overtime.
  • Physical Ability: Strength and agility sufficient to lift and maneuver heavy objects, climb into and operate large equipment.
  • Visual Ability: Sufficient to operate heavy equipment and trucks day and night, observe unsafe conditions and read/write reports.
  • Position designated Safety Sensitive; subject to drug and alcohol testing including pre-employment testing.
