Salary Range A reasonable full‑time salary estimate for this position is $69,073‑$77,030, based on UC Postdoc Salary scales.

Position Description The Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management seeks a Postdoctoral Scholar to work with the Grantham Lab in quantifying and implementing environmental flows in California rivers.
Position Duties Under the mentorship of the PI, you will:
Compile relevant datasets and develop hydrologic modeling approaches to predict natural streamflow across California’s stream network.
Evaluate model performance and quantify uncertainty.
Build reproducible and transparent modeling frameworks and data pipelines.
Lead preparation of peer‑reviewed manuscripts and pursue independent research lines.
Collaborate with partners on the California Environmental Flows Framework and with researchers at the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center for Data Science and the Environment.
Specific Responsibilities
Collate, clean, and assimilate data from publicly available sources.
Design, execute, and implement streamflow models for California rivers.
Evaluate model prediction performance and uncertainty.
Generate streamflow predictions for rivers.
Develop robust and transparent modeling framework and data pipelines.
Participate in regular research team meetings, including remote and in‑person.
Present results via presentations at regional, national, and international academic conferences.
Prepare at least one manuscript for submission to a peer‑reviewed journal.
Qualifications Basic Qualifications (required at time of application)
Ph.D. or equivalent international degree, or enrollment in a Ph.D. (or equivalent) program.
Additional Qualifications (required at time of start)
Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) required by the appointment start date.
No more than three years of post‑degree research experience by the start date.
Preferred Qualifications
Strong background in stream hydrology, hydrologic modeling, and data analytics, including machine learning and deep learning for time series prediction.
PhD in hydrology, water resources engineering, environmental sciences, data science, or a related field.
Proven expertise in streamflow modeling and statistical/physically based methods.
Exceptional data management and analysis skills, including advanced statistical methods and computer programming.
Experience with machine learning methods, including deep learning for time series analysis and streamflow prediction.
Experience or interest in learning open‑source software design, data curation practices, and environmental flow science.
Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with a broad range of research and management partners.
Strong track record of scholarly publications and academic contributions.
Compassionate, professional, and reliable team player who values healthy relationships with colleagues, collaborators, and stakeholders.
Strong communication and diplomacy skills to give and receive feedback, celebrate successes, and constructively confront challenges.
