Lead Middleware Engineer
Onsite – Washington, DC
20590 U.S. Citizenship + Public Trust Required Standard hours; later shift coverage to ~5–7pm. 24x7 on‑call rotation every 2–3 months. 6‑month contract | Possible extension |
Summary The Lead Middleware Engineer will support and optimize the DOT’s web application infrastructure, working closely across Application, Server, and Database teams. Responsible for sustaining legacy and modern middleware environments using technologies including ColdFusion, Docker, Cloud platforms (AWS/Azure), and enterprise middleware tools. Role includes performance tuning, incident resolution, architecture improvements, and middleware lifecycle management.
Key Responsibilities
Support middleware infrastructure: troubleshoot outages, improve performance, manage risk.
Serve as escalation point for middleware issues and production support.
Assist App teams with outage troubleshooting and configuration issues.
Perform system‑level middleware changes: load balancing, tuning, configuration management.
Maintain configuration consistency across environments.
Patch and upgrade middleware components through dev
→ QA
→ prod lifecycle.
Implement/administer middleware management tools across platforms.
Support hosting operations for web middleware components.
Monitor OEM patching and provide upgrade recommendations.
Maintain documentation, SOPs, and provide team training.
Required Experience & Skills
8+ years
engineering experience including architecture design, PoCs, analysis, documentation.
Strong middleware platform experience:
Apache Tomcat, WebLogic, Oracle App Server, Oracle SOA Suite, PHP, Python, IBM Infosphere, Node.js, .NET Framework, IIS, Red Hat JBoss
Integration expertise:
Web Servers:
Microsoft IIS, Apache Tomcat/HTTPS
Databases:
Oracle, SQL
Cloud:
AWS, Azure
Server administration knowledge relevant to middleware environments.
Experience performing RCA, risk mitigation, and tech refresh recommendations.
Experience with ITSM support environments and collaborating cross‑functionally.
Preferred Qualifications
Understanding of server security hardening &
DISA STIG
compliance.
Networking fundamentals for web apps:
TCP/IP, routing, DNS, port mapping .
Middleware configuration for Oracle/SQL in cloud and physical environments.
Experience with:
Windows Server 2016/2019/2022
VMware vSphere
or
Hyper‑V
