Pay Range:

$41.44 – $67.44 per hour

Summary This position performs a variety of breast imaging procedures that require independent judgement, ingenuity and competency. The role includes dual responsibility for breast ultrasound exams, mammography imaging, and related procedures. The sonographer operates ultrasound equipment, produces high-quality images, and serves as a liaison between the Breast Imaging Center and radiologists, exemplifying Rush mission, vision, and values while adhering to Rush policies and procedures.

Required Job Qualifications

Graduate of a formal Accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program or equivalent certification completion.

Active certification by American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (RDMS, BR) in Breast or by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT, BS) with advanced certification in Breast Ultrasound.

Minimum 2 years of Breast Imaging experience.

Proficient sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures for anatomical, pathological and diagnostic information and images.

Independent judgment to acquire optimal breast sonographic information with each examination.

Ability to evaluate images for technical quality, ensuring correct imaging protocol.

Operational proficiency with sonographic equipment.

Consistent acquisition of high‑quality images, demonstrating overall excellent quality work.

Effective communication of breast information to the attending physician and the patient and health‑care team.

Ability to provide one‑to‑one feedback, coaching, and mentoring to staff to improve image quality and patient care.

Strong customer‑service, decision‑making, organizational, and follow‑up skills.

Independent work capability.

Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills.

Computer skills.

Preferred Job Qualifications

Epic system knowledge.

Experience performing both mammography images and ultrasound sonography.

Responsibilities

Serve in dual role performing both mammography images and ultrasound sonography.

Obtain optimum quality breast images for radiologist interpretation in both modalities.

Conduct screening mammograms independently; perform diagnostic breast imaging under radiologist supervision.

Perform diagnostic examinations independently.

Assist with diagnostic mammography procedures as needed.

Perform breast ultrasound exams lasting 15–90 minutes, using aseptic techniques for invasive procedures.

Assess patients by reviewing prior studies and history to determine screening versus diagnostic need.

Provide patient instructions and ensure safety, comfort and mental well‑being.

Train mammography technologists on ultrasound techniques, provide hands‑on coaching, and monitor competency.

Develop training programs for new ultrasound equipment and maintain up‑to‑date skills.

Monitor and evaluate imaging quality and new sonographers.
