Fairfield Country Day School Director of Athletics
The Fairfield Country Day Athletic Director leads K-9 athletics and physical education with a clear vision that balances school-based participation and external opportunities. This role fosters a mission-aligned athletic culture that supports elite, recreational, and developing athletes alike, emphasizing strong teacher-coach relationships, intentional skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Serving as a bridge between students, families, faculty, and community partners, the Director oversees programs, facilities, facility rentals, and communications to ensure every boy grows as an athlete, teammate, and member of the school community. At FCDS, we believe that athletics, aligned with academics, develops boys who compete, collaborate, and lead with integrity.

Oversee curricular alignment
Grades 4-5 Intramural team sports
Fall - Soccer + Flag Football
Winter - Ice Hockey + Basketball
Spring - Lacrosse + Baseball
Grades 6-9 Interscholastic Junior Varsity and Varsity teams
Fall - Soccer + Flag Football + Cross Country
Winter - Ice Hockey + Basketball + Fitness
Spring - Lacrosse + Baseball + Cross Country
Pickleball offered as an intramural option in the fall and spring
Key Responsibilities
Build upon and maintain a developmentally appropriate and inclusive K-9 athletics program that fosters development, school spirit, and teamwork.
Build and maintain a strong school athletic identity while collaborating with families and external organizations (e.g., club teams, local leagues) to support well-rounded student-athletes.
Adapt programming to reflect trends and best practices in youth sports and physical literacy.
Take into account the size of the school and balance with the number of athletic offerings.
Program Operations
Hire, train, and evaluate coaching and PE staff; promote a positive and professional team culture.
Ensure that training for coaches aligns with FCDS expectations for faculty and staff.
Coordinate team logistics including scheduling, transportation, referees, uniforms, and equipment.
Oversee compliance with league guidelines, school policies, and safety standards.
Attend and build relationships at Fairchester Athletic Director meetings
Student Experience & Safety
Promote student-athlete wellness, sportsmanship, and leadership development.
Collaborate with the school nurse and counselor on injury prevention, return-to-play protocols, and student well-being.
Ensure consistent adult supervision and risk management at all athletic events and practices.
Enrollment & Community Engagement
Position FCDS as a leading voice in boys' physical education and athletic development.
Partner with the Director of Enrollment to attract and retain student-athletes who will thrive in the school’s program.
Represent athletics at admissions and school events; foster positive relationships with prospective families.
Celebrate student-athlete achievement and school spirit through assemblies, publications, and social media.
When applicable, advocate for students as they apply to secondary school.
Facility Rentals & Strategic Use
Proactively seek and manage rental opportunities for the school's gymnasium, fields, and hockey rink in alignment with the School's strategic goals.
Work closely with the Director of Operations to manage facilities wear and tear.
Balance internal program needs with external revenue-generating opportunities, ensuring alignment with school values.
Work with the Business Office and Operations to manage contracts, scheduling, supervision, and billing.
Internal & External Communication
Maintain strong, proactive communication with parents about expectations, schedules, team culture, and student progress.
Collaborate regularly with division heads, faculty, and operations staff to align athletics with the broader school program.
Act as a liaison with external athletic organizations to support healthy participation and cooperation between school and outside sports commitments.
Collaborate with the Marketing/Communications team to promote and celebrate FCDS athletics.
Administrative & Budget Oversight
Manage the athletics department budget responsibly, aligning resources with program goals.
Maintain accurate rosters, records, schedules, and results.
Oversee athletic awards and recognitions.
Monitor and maintain athletic equipment, uniforms, and facilities.
Periodic evening and weekend responsibilities for games, events, and rentals.

Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred (education, sports administration, or related field).
3–5+ years of experience in athletic administration, coaching, or youth sports leadership.
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and written/verbal communication skills.
Proficient in GoogleDocs, Microsoft Office suite
Experience with facility operations, rentals, or external partnerships preferred.
CPR/AED and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
