Principal Cloud Engineer
Location: Washington, DC (1200 New Jersey Ave SE) — 100% Onsite. Clearance: Public Trust (U.S. Citizen required). Duration: 6 Months with Possible Extension. Work Schedule: Standard, 40 hours/week.
Role Summary The Principal Cloud Engineer will serve as a senior technical expert responsible for designing, deploying, and managing cloud architectures across AWS and/or Azure environments. This role involves hands‑on engineering, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), troubleshooting complex issues, and guiding cloud adoption best practices within a fast‑paced federal environment. The engineer will influence strategic cloud decisions, ensure alignment with FedRAMP requirements, and collaborate with cross‑functional teams to deliver secure, scalable, and cost‑effective cloud solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, deploy, and troubleshoot cloud architectures and services.
Produce Infrastructure as Code (IaC) or Configuration as Code (CaC) with a code‑first approach, ensuring clarity and maintainability.
Collaborate with engineering and development teams to evaluate and implement optimal cloud solutions.
Diagnose and resolve complex performance, security, and technical challenges across cloud environments.
Support all tiers of cloud‑hosted applications, including configuration of networks, cloud‑native services, infrastructure, and user privileges.
Identify opportunities to optimize cloud consumption and provide strategic recommendations.
Create and update cloud environment configurations to support application workloads, including:
Azure:
Subscriptions, Resource Groups, VNets, Subnets, load balancers, App Services, Azure Batch, Virtual Machines, resource tagging, billing, policy enforcement, and security controls.
AWS:
Accounts, IAM users/roles, VPCs, subnets, load balancers, routing, Transit Gateway, Control Tower, Systems Manager, Config Manager, stack sets, WAF, CloudFront, Route53.
Required Technical Skills
12+ years
in Information Technology, including
8+ years of hands‑on deployment/configuration experience
in AWS or Azure (DevOps‑oriented experience preferred).
Expertise in designing and implementing cloud architectures.
Strong understanding of
FedRAMP
services and associated best practices.
Experience managing
AWS Public and GovCloud
across regions.
Experience deploying
stack sets
and using
AWS Control Tower .
Strong knowledge of enterprise computing, Linux and Windows operating systems, and troubleshooting methodologies.
Proficiency in automation using
Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, Packer, PowerShell, or Python , including interaction with remote APIs.
Demonstrated experience implementing and managing AWS services via Console or CLI (IAM users/roles, VPCs, load balancers, etc.).
Solid understanding of cloud engineering methods, applications, and best practices across providers.
Knowledge of
Agile
methodologies.
Experience documenting
requirements, user stories, and use cases .
Ability to perform effectively within a dynamic, fast‑paced team environment.
Professional Architect Certification
in either
AWS
or
