Senior Electrical Engineer – Powell Industries
Location: Spring, TX. Salary: $125,000.00 - $130,000.00 per year. Full-time employment.
Overview A Senior Electrical Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing electrical systems and equipment for Powell’s manufacturing operations. The role includes supervising projects, providing technical expertise, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations, and collaborating with cross‑functional teams to solve complex electrical problems and implement innovative solutions.
Responsibilities
Independently complete standard projects to match client specifications and requirements.
Draft electrical construction drawings using AutoCAD in conjunction with the mechanical and wiring teams.
Engineer 480V motor controls and 480V/38kV switchgear, and design other electrical equipment.
Interpret project write‑ups, client specifications, drawings, and correspondence throughout the project life cycle.
Create and validate bills of materials for client submittal and approval.
Conduct self and peer design reviews to verify accuracy and completeness before issuing projects to manufacturing.
Mentor junior engineers on the team.
Provide technical support in client meetings.
Coordinate with purchasing and suppliers to specify and approve component parts and assemblies.
Notify supervisors and project management of issues that impact scope, budget, and schedule.
Collaborate with electrical and mechanical engineering teams to develop final design and construction packages, including wiring diagrams, one‑line, three‑line diagrams, control schemes, and mechanical layouts.
Create AC and DC schematics, door component layouts, and wiring diagrams for project approval, construction, and as‑built drawings.
Support sales, application engineering, and inspection teams throughout the project life cycle.
Assist production engineers in daily problem resolution.
Adhere to Powell’s policies, procedures, ISO policies, and safety rules and regulations.
Meet regularly with clients, suppliers, and OEMs.
Qualifications
BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, or related field.
Advanced drafting/AutoCAD skills.
Proficient in electrical switchgear design and control schemes.
Proficient in understanding power systems and relay applications for switchgear products.
Experience
Engineer level: 0‑3 years of relevant experience.
Senior Engineer level: 4‑8 years of relevant experience.
Lead Engineer level: 7‑10 years of relevant experience.
Skills
Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects, schedules, and budgets in a fast‑paced environment.
Strong organization, communication, presentation, and planning skills.
Experience addressing production issues and engineering development tasks.
Collaborative team player with cross‑functional teamwork.
Self‑motivated with resilience on complex, first‑of‑its‑kind projects.
Excellent problem‑solving and troubleshooting of system‑level issues.
Solid understanding of one‑line, three‑line drawings, control schematics, and wiring diagrams.
Familiarity with power distribution equipment (three‑phase systems, relays, transformers, control switches).
Good understanding of 480V through 38kV distribution and switchgear operation.
Knowledge of NEC, IEEE, ANSI, UL, and other applicable codes.
Ability to develop cost‑competitive engineering solutions.
Strong customer service commitment.
Proficient in project specification and drawing reviews, including interpretation of client specifications.
Working Conditions
Normal office environment with periodic work in a shop and field sites.
