Director of Engineering (Software & IT)

Role Overview The Director of Engineering is responsible for leading and scaling the organisation’s Software and IT functions, ensuring high-quality delivery across product development, internal technology, and customer-facing solutions. This role blends strategic leadership with hands‑on technical oversight, managing multidisciplinary engineering, IT infrastructure, and project delivery teams. The Director will drive engineering excellence, operational reliability, and continuous improvement across all technology initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Define and execute the engineering strategy aligned to business objectives and product roadmap.
Lead, mentor, and grow high‑performing teams across Software Engineering, IT Operations, Systems Administration, QA, and Project Management.
Partner with senior leadership (CTO, Product, Operations, Client Delivery) to shape technology direction and architectural decisions.
Promote a culture of accountability, innovation, and engineering best practice.
Technical Oversight
Provide architectural and technical guidance across software systems, infrastructure, integrations, and cybersecurity.
Oversee system design, scalability, security, and performance standards.
Review and guide major engineering decisions, ensuring alignment with organisational goals.
Champion modern tooling, DevOps, CI/CD, cloud best practices, and development methodologies.
Project & Delivery Management
Oversee end‑to‑end delivery of engineering and IT projects, ensuring scope, timelines, and budgets are maintained.
Implement and refine project governance frameworks (Agile, Scrum, Kanban, or hybrid).
Track KPIs for delivery efficiency, software quality, and operational uptime.
Ensure cross‑functional coordination between engineering, product, QA, and customer implementation teams.
People & Performance Management
Hire, develop, and retain engineering and IT talent.
Set clear goals, conduct performance reviews, and manage team structure for scalability.
Build succession plans and technical leadership capability across the department.
Operational Excellence
Ensure robust IT service delivery, cybersecurity compliance, and data governance.
Manage vendor relationships, technology contracts, and licensing.
Establish consistent standards for documentation, code quality, release processes, and incident management.
Participate in budgeting and forecasting for engineering resources, tooling, and infrastructure.
Required Qualifications & Experience
10+ years of experience in software engineering or IT leadership, with at least 5 years in a management role.
Proven track record leading cross‑functional engineering and IT teams in a US‑based organisation.
Strong understanding of modern software architecture (cloud‑native, microservices, APIs, DevOps).
Experience implementing project delivery methodologies at scale.
Background working in environments with complex systems, stakeholder groups, or mission‑critical applications.
Excellent communication and leadership skills, with ability to influence at executive level.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (Master’s preferred).
