Job Overview The Research Scientist position in the Fornace Lab within the Department of Oncology at Georgetown University focuses on conducting innovative, in-depth scientific research using in vivo and in vitro models to understand and mitigate the biological effects of ionizing radiation, including both low- and high-LET radiation types. This full-time, in-person position is funded by ongoing projects from the DOD, NIAID, and NASA. Primary responsibilities include designing and executing experiments, analyzing data, and contributing to the advancement of radiobiology through high-impact research, including publications and presentations at scientific conferences.

Duties include but are not limited to

Design and conduct animal model-based studies to investigate radiation's biological effects.

Perform irradiation procedures (whole-body and partial-body) using Cesium and X-ray irradiators.

Conduct tissue processing, histology, and microscopy analysis (brightfield and fluorescence).

Analyze experimental data and maintain detailed laboratory records for publication.

Contribute to grant proposal preparation and ensure compliance with IACUC protocols.

Train junior lab members and interns on specialized laboratory techniques.

Work Interactions The Research Scientist will work closely with principal investigators Dr. Shubhankar Suman and Dr. Albert J. Fornace, Jr., to design and execute key research projects within the Fornace Lab. This position will collaborate with other lab members and research assistants to advance the lab's research agenda in radiation biology. The Research Scientist will report directly to Dr. Suman as the immediate supervisor and to Dr. Fornace as the overall supervisor.
