Summary The Primary Purpose of the Position: The Health Care Technician is responsible for the collection and processing of specimens from patients admitted to the Unit. The Organizational Location of the Position: The Health Care Technician works under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and is directly accountable to the Nurse Manager of the Unit. The position is located at Polk Street VA Clinic part of North Texas Veterans Health Care System - Nursing Service - Patient Care Section - Dallas - Texas.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement - 12/19/2025.
Health Technician requires the Individual Occupational Requirements to be met.
Specialized Experience : One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS‑05. Examples include initiating patient care such as collection of laboratory specimens (blood, urine, stool), documenting in the clinical record, infection prevention, providing emergency care, and recognizing abnormal findings.
Volunteer experience with National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) is eligible for credit if it demonstrates relevant competencies.
Full year of work is considered 35‑40 hours per week. Part‑time experience will be credited prorated.
Duties
Collection of laboratory specimens (blood, urine, stool)
Processing of specimens by centrifuge to separate plasma and serum
Separation of specimens into correct tubes for transportation to various labs
Performs D‑Sticks for Metabolic studies
Obtains timely and appropriate blood samples as ordered per unit policies and procedures
Recognize abnormal lab values and reports to Charge Nurse and Physician
Exercises sound judgment to identify patient care needs and implement treatment protocols
Directs and supports patients in the implementation of unit protocols and treatment goals
Instructs patients on their role in various procedures and metabolic protocols
Reviews current treatment plan and records on assigned patients before initiating procedures
Documents progress toward protocols and medical treatment needs in the clinical record
Participates in discharge planning and referral data collection
Obtains venous blood samples by aseptic venipuncture technique; proficiently collects blood with minimal failures
Verifies patient information and tests ordered in the computer system
Ensures specimens are properly labeled and initiated following procurement policies
Obtains specimens including blood, urine, feces, nasopharyngeal swabs, and fecal occult blood specimens (FOBT kit)
Performs processing of all clinical laboratory specimens and ensures timely distribution to reference laboratories
Responsible for proper disposition of laboratory waste
Obtains and documents patients' vital signs, including 12‑Lead ECGs, and reports abnormal findings to the PACT team
Moves, lifts, transfers, and transports patients; monitors pain scale
Monitors lab environment (temperatures, freezers, refrigerators, incubators)
Applies knowledge of Laboratory accreditation requirements (CAP, FDA, Joint Commission)
Performs ancillary testing such as CLIA waived testing and operates instrumentation necessary for testing
Completes eyewash station testing
Performs urine pregnancy testing to include controls
Performs quality control (QC) on glucose testing machine
Works with all levels of healthcare system personnel and assists with laboratory policies and procedures
Interacts professionally with veteran patients, family members, and all staff
Performs patient/family teaching, electronic documentation, and basic computer knowledge
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm; may be required to work other shifts, including weekends and holidays
Willingness to work within other units (including community based outpatient clinics) as needed
Location: Polk VA Clinic – 4243 South Polk Street – Dallas, TX 75224‑4928
No physical relocation or recruitment incentives are authorized
Physical Requirements: Ability to transport patients by wheelchair or stretcher; extensive periods of standing, walking, bending, lifting; ability to work 8‑12 hour shifts; ability to function in stressful situations.
